plang: 6..g6 is a rarely played alternative to 6..e6 and 6..e5. Anand had introduced 7 g4 in a win against Short in Amsterdam 1996. Short had played 8..b5?!. In his analysis Anand had recommended 10 Rg1 with a small advantage for White. Georgiev had played 11..Qa5 against Tseshkovsky in 1997 and had won from an inferior position; 11..Qb6 was a clear improvement targeting the b-pawn. Smirin could have played 11 Bxf4 with a small advantage. After 13..e5 he was a pawn down and the weakness in Black's light squares did not seem to be adequate compensation. Accepting Georgiev's exchange sacrifice with 17 Qf6+..Kc7 18 Qxh8..Qb4+ 19 Bd2..Qxc4 leads to a solid advantage for Black. After 22..d5! Smirin was lost. If the d-pawn is captured by either the e-pawn or the bishop the queen is trapped by 23..Rf6 and 24..Rd8. 23 Qxd5 would have allowed 23..Rd8 24 Qe6..Rd1+
25 Kg2..f3+.
