43 ... ♖a8-f8?

43 ... ♖a8-f8? seems like a strong move, <PINNING> the White f7-queen to the White f5-king.

But as user <whiteshark> points out above, 43 ... ♖a8-f8? is actually a blunder which allows a forced mate in 5(!) beginning with the excellent <DEFLECTION> 44 ♖b1-h1+!.

44 ♖b1-h1+!

44 ♖b1-h1+! is an excellent example of an <OVERLOADED> piece: the Black f3-queen cannot both <DEFEND> the h1-checking square from the White b1-rook while also <PINNING> the White f4-knight to the White f5-king to stop the mating ♘f4-g6+.

Here the tactically alert Rodshtein (White) sees that the Black h8-king is <TRAPPED IN A CORRIDOR> on the h-file: the Black g8-rook <SELF-BLOCKS> the g8-square while the White b7-rook covers the g7-square. The Black h8-king is also <STALEMATED> as the White b7-rook also covers the h7-square.

Rodshstein further sees that the White f7-queen is *not* needed to <TRAP> the Black h8-king on the h-file and that only the Black h4-queen prevents a mating check on h1.

So what does Rodshtein do? He sacrifices his queen in order to play the mating check, of course! Rodshtein <REMOVES THE GUARD> of the h1-checking square with the <QUEEN SACRIFICE> 45 ♕f7-f6+!.

Black is then mated after 45 ... ♕h4x♕f6 46 ♖b1-h1+ ♕f6-h6 47 ♖h1x♕h6#

45 ♕f7-f6+! 1-0 <remove guard: h1>

With the brilliant 45 ♕f7-f6+!, Rodshtein attacks the Black h4-queen defender of the h1-checking square while simultaneously attacking something else, the Black h8-king.

Black is then mated by 45 ... ♕h4x♕f6 46 ♖b1-h1+ ♕f6-h6(h4) 47 ♖h1x♕h6(h4)#.
