Jan-30-06  WMD: Williams annotates this game, see pg.7:

http://www.chesscenter.com/june2005...

Mar-25-18  PhilFeeley: 40...Be6 (forced) 41. Rg8 maybe...Rxh7 42. Rxh7 Bxg8 then what? Bishop and knight for rook. Maybe white gets another passed pawn on the kingside, but it might take a long time. I'd bet Magnus at any strength could beat me with this.
Mar-25-18  luhur: why magnus don't play 28....RXh4?
Mar-26-18  wtpy: The birth of Harry. g6 gives white a target; hard to imagine Magnus ever making moves like that, no matter how young.17 Nb6 and black has equalized.

  keypusher: <luhur: why magnus don't play 28....RXh4?>

Good question. It would have given him a won position. He still would have been winning if he'd found 30....Nd6!!. WMD's link to Williams' annotations doesn't work anymore.

An Englishman: Good Evening: After 28...Rxh4; does 29.Rxh4,Qxf5; 30.Rf4 help defend the King side? Black would have to turn his attention to the a4 pawn with 30...Qd7, which does look troublesome.

Also, would 30.Rxh4 improve? 30...Qxf5; 31.Qxf5,Rxh5; 32.Rh7+ and 33.g4 might get the King side pawns rolling.

40...Be6 41.Rgg6 wins.

Teyss: Carlsen was only 15 but it's surprising how he played. If he wanted to go for Rxh4 he should have done it earlier as mentioned above. After the Q exchange the BB and BN are too remote to prevent the WP from advancing.

Even later <keypusher>'s 30....Nd6 is good as it gets the BN into action with tempo and keeps the Qs on. If 31.Bg4 (to avoid a future ...Qf3+) Qxf2+ 32.Kd1 Qg2 33.Re1 Qxg4+ 34.Qe2 Qxh4. Black has B+N vs R and dominates the board; Rf2 and Nc4 or Ne4 can follow; Pa4 and Pe3 are weak; the WK is exposed.

Anyone understands the pun?

Sep-24-22  goodevans: <25.a4 [better is 25.axb4 Qxb4+ 26.Qxb4 axb4 27.Rb1 Rab8 28.Bc2 Na3 29.Rb2 = -0.08 (29 ply)]>

25.a4 jarred with me before I'd even seen that SF annotation. That pawn on a4 is just so weak. What can White do to stop Black ganging up on it and getting connected passed pawns? I can only imagine Williams thought he could drum up enough counterplay on the other side of the board to avoid this but that seems very doubtful to me.

The SF annotations go on to say <26.Bd3> is best instead of the game's 26.Ke2(?). After that play might well have gone <26...Nb6 27.Ke2 Qd7 28.Qc2 Kb7> and Black gets his two passers and with them, probably the game.

Fair play to Williams, though. When he got his chance he took it brilliantly. A very neat finish from the Ginger GM.
