Jul-27-06 | | Timothy Glenn Forney: 19...Nxg2!! & Bxh3! Great attack on 0-0.Demolition of pawn structure at its best. |
Jul-27-06 | | CapablancaFan: How to destroy a kingside 101. Class over. |
Jul-27-06 | | jackmandoo: That came right out of left field!! I love being surprised like that! |
Jul-28-06 | | LPeristy: Losing this game would have annoyed me. Making no very obvious error, but being totally destroyed. |
Jul-28-06 | | Longbrow: "One way or another..I'm gonna, gonna githca".
I enjoyed how 17 Kh2 in defense of h3 was simply sidestepped by Nxg2. I would have liked to see Gilbert play more. |
Jul-28-06 | | SneechLatke: Wow. Out of left field is right! |
Jul-28-06 | | netlava: I'm guessing this pun is somewhat related to a basketball player named Gilbert Arenas? |
Jul-28-06 | | chessmoron: <netlava> Actually no. I'm guessing is something that gives tribute to Jessie Gillbert's tragic death. |
Jul-28-06 | | thesonicvision: <netlava: I'm guessing this pun is somewhat related to a basketball player named Gilbert Arenas?> yes. gilbert arenas is the star
of the washington wizards and the
obvious reference in the pun.
<chessmoron: <-netlava-> Actually no. I'm guessing is something that gives tribute to Jessie Gillbert's tragic death.> a tragedy indeed. first wojo, and
now a young prodigy.
Jul-28-06 | | Manic: Ummm, why would you make the pun in reference to gilbert arenas? |
Jul-28-06 | | geezerbloke: 4 months earlier she pulled off the same sac and won. It is inspired r.i.p. |
Jul-28-06 | | MrMelad: Does white have to take the bishop with 21.Kxh3? It seems that after 21.Kg1 black needs another move to build the attack and white now has the resource Nh2. It looks like all black get achieve is a draw. Why am I wrong, please? |
Jul-28-06 | | percyblakeney: <MrMelad> You're right, 21. Kg1 (or Kh1) looks like a draw. |
Jul-28-06 | | MrMelad: It's the second time I find Nh2 as a good (?) move people missed. What is it with that move? :) |
Jul-28-06 | | cannibal: <MrMelad>
I haven't really played it through, but I think after 21. Kg1 or Kh1 black has decisive advantage.
For example, 21. ... Qf6, and now, if Kg1 and Nh2: Qg5. Or, if Kg1 and Qe2: Qf4 (threatening Qg4+, and Qg5+, if the knight moves). Or, if Kh1 (+ 22. Nh2 or others): black can create a killer attack with Bf4+Qh4.
And last but not least, Bxf1 already gives black material equality, so white can't afford screwing up his position like that. |
Jul-28-06 | | cannibal: After some analysis with a not so strong program, I think white can at least play on after Kh1, Qf6 and now either Rd3 or Nh2. Though probably with a slightly inferior position. |
Jul-28-06 | | MrMelad: <cannibal> 21.Kg1 Qf6 22.Rd3 seem to defend. If black takes the rook it's about even material as you suggested and it seems like a draw to me. Also possible is 22. Qe2. |
Jul-28-06 | | MrMelad: The position doesn't seem that hard to require an engine, though we might miss some combinations. Nh2 is a resource if black plays moves like 21.. Qc8 (21..Qd7? 22.Nxe5!). 21..Qf6 does seem to be the stongest move but it's defendable though rather cramped. I don't know much about position evaluations but I can't see any logical way for black to win by force. Maybe your engine can find one? |
Jul-28-06 | | outplayer: 27. Kh1 Qh3+ 28. Kg1 Qh2# |

Jul-28-06
 | | Phony Benoni: I like the way that Black was able to gain time for the kingside assault by distracting White with an attack on the queenside holes created by 8.a3. Among other things, this lured the KB away from protecting the knight on f3. |
Jul-28-06 | | Manequinho: Wow! Brilliant! |
Jul-28-06 | | Max Lange: After 20...Bxh3+ White is lost, even if it does not take the bishop, as the K-side is destroyed. Even Fritz at 5 seconds a move says black is down at least a pawn. If you can't see that you are still a class C player! LOL. An amazing example of an "optically well defended" K-side for white--that is, an optical illusion! |
Jul-28-06 | | kevin86: Huge tears and coldolences for everyone related to Ms Gilbert on her death. Wow! two days ago! After that, any comment on the game seems so petty. Suffice to say that the sacs and attack was brilliant. The closing moves turned out to be in sharp contrast with the reality :( |
Jul-28-06 | | MrMelad: Yes ;-((
I didn't know, if I had know I would pay more repect. Deep coldolences from me too. What a sad day :( |
Jul-28-06 | | padraic: What's wrong with 13. Bxh6? |
