FSR: Eek. 38...f5?? lost Black's knight. What a horrible blunder. Verber was a super-strong player who turned down two invitations to the U.S. Championship. Sadly, he couldn't keep his weight under control (he was extremely obese) and he died recently. Tim Redman wrote a touching tribute to him.

Jun-09-14  jerseybob: FSR: Lombardy probably muttered something a little less genteel than "eek" under his breath after 39.g3. Black's under pressure, but 38..Ne6 might hold.
Jun-09-14  RookFile: Don't know what happened, it looked like Lombardy was outplaying Verber and on a way to a routine win, but somehow he lost the thread and Verber siezed his chance.

Phony Benoni: 'Chess Life", September 1966, p.231:

<"...and Lombardy, pressing too hard in a level position, fell victim to time pressure and lost to Richard Verber.">

The time control was 50 moves in 2½ hours.

Jun-10-14  jerseybob: Bobby Fischer, after several uncomfortable encounters with 6.f4, finally decided to not let white play Bh6, and against Nicevski at Skopje 1967, played 13..h6, instead of Lombardy's 13..00. Not that black scored an instant win: far from it. But 13..h6, followed soon by g5 and Nh5/f4, threw white off his "formula". Black never did castle, but Fischer knew exactly what he was doing.
