Kibitzer's Corner
May-21-24  jffun1958: 29...Rxc3+! 30.bxc3 Bc2 will win a piece.
May-21-24  stacase: Always accept your opponent's resignation. I had expected 31. Rc1, and Black's Pawns were kinda crappy.
May-21-24  saturn2: Bc2 would be a fork butthe Rc5 is attacked. So start with a tempo 29....Rxc3
May-21-24  mel gibson: Not too hard but it's a long game after that.

Stockfish 16.1 says:

29. .. Rxc3+

(29. .. Rxc3+ (1. ... Rxc3+ 2.bxc3 Bc2 3.Rc1 Bxb3 4.Bh3 Bxd5 5.Rd1 Bc4 6.Kf2 Re8 7.e3 d5 8.Bf1 Bxc3 9.Bxc4 dxc4 10.Ke2 Bf6 11.Rd7 b5 12.Rxa7 Bd4 13.Rd7 Rxe3+ 14.Kd1 Bg7 ) +4.79/42 253)

score for Black +4.79 depth 42

29....Rxc3+ 30.bxc3 Bc2 31.Rc1 Bxb3, what exactly is White ging to do? After 32.Rb1 Bxd5 -+ protecting b7 and the King is centralized against two bishops. White is toast.

  Teyss: <stacase: (...) Black's Pawns were kinda crappy.> White's might be even worse notably c3 and d5.

The only way White can protect both of them against the BBs is 31.Rc1 Bxb3 32.f4 (32.c4 Rc8 wins the P and opens the column) Bc4 33.Bf3 (else ...Re8+) b5 (avoiding a4) and White's position is cramped. Despite the slight material unbalance (B vs 2 Ps), Black's Bishop pair dominates the board.

Black can then for instance go for 34...gxf4+ 35.gxf4 Rf5 followed by Rh5 or Bxd5.

Like those little aphorisms when you post, one says something about when your opponent's move is a surprise you're nearly half lost - or something like that.

Well anyway, the Rook sacrifice followed by the Bishop forking White's Rook & Knight looked best and what I would have done over the board. But I didn't see a mate, and I expected the game to continue. So the surprise was the resignation.

Thanks for making me look up aphorism, it's these specifics in English I'm not too familiar with. Not sure if what I posted can be classified as one though, I quite literally meant what White's going to do, albeit if he were to continue playing :>

dorsnikov: Funny thing about these daily puzzles. None of them are in the "very difficult" category if you can see the solution.

scormus: I reckon the comments on today's puzzle are more interesting that the puzzle itself.

<TheaN: .... not too familiar with>

Aphorism. Has a simple literal meaning, but is deceptively nuanced. I think anyone could be forgiven for being unsure what someone really means when they use the word. And also whether it applies.

scormus: Just when I posted, the CG page came back with "Loose pieces drop off"

If that's not an aphorism, then I don't know what is.
