Nov-04-06  thathwamasi: my reaction was 'OH MY GOD'..when i saw this finish...
Nov-04-06  luzhin: Notice that ALL Black's pieces are en prise(not to mention his back rank).
Nov-17-06  Holmstrom: ... Nb4 (Ha, retreat your queen!)

LIFE Master AJ: Its a great little game of chess.
Jan-11-11  jmboutiere: This tactical end forecasts the number one on the FIDE ranking list january 2011, with 2814 points = MAGNUS CARLSEN
Jan-20-21  SeanAzarin: Why can't Black defend with 27... Q-Q3? What am I missing?

al wazir: 25...Nb4 was not a good move. I think 25...b4 keeps the game alive.
Jan-20-21  GerMalaz: 27....♕d6 28 ♕xe6 +-
Jan-20-21  morfishine: Nice quality game <CG>!
Jan-20-21  goodevans: <al wazir> 25...Nb4 was not a good move indeed but <25...b4> would not have been good either. It robs the N of the b4 square meaning white can play <26.Rxd5> without succumbing to a N-fork. Black would then have moves like Bg3 and Rf5 to worry about.

On the other hand it's difficult to find any good 25th move for black!

Jan-20-21  Ironmanth: Amazing last move!! I am dumbfounded by the utter elegance of it. Thanks, chessgames. Y'all stay safe out there today, ok?!
Jan-20-21  Cheapo by the Dozen: Awesome!

Good fit for the pun idea, too.

But why the "I will" part? Was "Watch Your Back" already used?

27. ... ♕d6? 28. ♖xb8+ ♕xb8 29. ♕xe6 +-

Jan-20-21  lentil: Does anybody know the game in which MC mated by pushing sequentially h4, h5, h6?
Jan-20-21  Damenlaeuferbauer: A young Laurent Fressinet destructs himself, why didn't he play 16.-,a3! (otherwise black's 14th and 15th move are senseless), which is well known and was played in the 1980s and 1990s by the great Open Ruy connoisseurs A. Yusupov, V. Korchnoi, J. Timman and V. Anand of this epoch against giants like A. Karpov, R. Huebner, L. Ljubojevic, N. Short and V. Ivanchuk. Innovation is good, but it must be logical! It's just stupid to play against well-proven opening theory. Did he really think, that he can disturb a player like Magnus Carlsen with second-rated moves? 10,5 moves later everything was over. So this game is rather a Fressinet loss than a Carlsen win.
Jan-20-21  thegoodanarchist: < Damenlaeuferbauer: A young Laurent Fressinet destructs himself...>

Fressinet is 9 years older than Carlsen

<So this game is rather a Fressinet loss than a Carlsen win.>

Out come the Carlsen haters, who never want to give him credit.

No one can win a chess game unless his opponent makes a mistake. Even engines cannot defeat perfect play.

Jan-20-21  Ned Merrill: Nasty move by Carlsen!
