FSR: A nice scalp for Taylor.
Jan-16-13  jerseybob: FSR: A nice scalp indeed, and no pun intended with Ken Rogoff! I've long wondered why more people don't play this version of the Bird.

FSR: <jerseybob> Rogoff does have quite an expanse of scalp, though he was probably more hirsute back then. 1.f4 is easily the most popular opening move that gives White a minus score (only 46%). Opening Explorer As such, I'm not surprised that not too many people play it. Black's five most popular moves (1...d5, 1...e5, 1...Nf6, 1...c5, and 1...g6) all give him major plus scores, as does 1...b6 - although the sample size for that one is small. Opening Explorer But I'll grant you that White does get a small plus score after 1.f4 d5 2.Nf3 c5 3.g3. Opening Explorer But he gets a larger plus score with any of the opening moves that are more popular than 1.f4 (1.e4, 1.d4, 1.Nf3, 1.c4, and 1.g3). White even gets a bigger plus score against the Sicilian, a low-scoring opening for White, than he does after 1.f4 d5 2.Nf3 c5 3.g3. Opening Explorer
Jan-16-13  jerseybob: If you're gonna play the Bird, you need to know From's Gambit(1..e5), just like in playing the Dutch you need to know the Staunton. But if you're looking for an off-beat, trenchant type of game, the Bird is an interesting choice. Larsen-Spassky '64 and Larsen-Petrosian '58 are two of my favorite games.
May-03-16  Howard: Nice endgame !
