Kibitzer's Corner
Jun-10-17  Howard: This game took place in the last round of Lone Pine 1975. It seems a bit strange that Benko didn't press for a win here, given that a win would have netted him more prize money.

CL&R made the amusing comment, incidentally, that just prior to the final round pairings being posted, Weinstein was "practically the most popular player in town", adding that "everyone wanted to play him".

Translated: going into the last round, Weinstein was undoubtedly the weakest player among the leaders, plus he was due to have Black in his last game. Several of the other leaders, therefore, viewed him as a relatively easy point.

Benko apparently didn't think so, though.

Oct-15-19  Caissanist: I believe this was the year that Lone Pine invited every grandmaster in the world to play, paying their traveling expenses to get there, but then deducting travel costs from their prize money. So Benko probably wouldn't have gotten anything even if he had won this game.
