 | | Phony Benoni: Unless you're Reti, it's probably best to keep your queen out of the corner. 24.Nf6+ would be a nice shot for an early-part-of-the-week puzzler. |

Aug-17-17
 | | Phony Benoni: Perhaps a little harder than I thought a decade ago, since White has a number of tempting choices. Having completely forgotten my previous post, I was considering 24.Qxc5. |
|
Aug-17-17 | | goldfarbdj: I was originally considering Nc7 or Nb6, but black can counter this with Rxd1. I too was considering Qxc5 -- I glanced at Nf6+ but didn't look into it deeply enough. |
|
Aug-17-17 | | Fish55: I saw 24.Ne7+, which also wins, but is not as strong at 24.Nf6+. |
|
Aug-17-17 | | ChessHigherCat: Looks like 24. Nf6+ is the most forcing move.
If Kh8 then 25. Rxd8 Nxd8 Re8# which is too easy for a Friday, so it can't be the best defense. If Kf8, the above line works again.
If 24. Nf6+ gxf6 25. Rxd8+ Nxd8 26. Bh6 Ne6 27. Qh4 and black has no defense. Lez checkydoubt maan |
|
Aug-17-17 | | Gilmoy: And don't fianchetto the rook to make room for her. |
|
Aug-17-17 | | ChessHigherCat: My solution isn't the game line but I think it works unless black had a better defense earlier on: 24. Nf6+ gxf6 25. Rxd8+ Nxd8 26. Bh6 Ne6 27. Qh4 if Ng5 28. Re8#
if Kh8 28. Qxf6+ Ng7 29.Qxg7# |
|
Aug-17-17 | | Afroim: 24.Ne7 is also winning easily |
|
Aug-17-17 | | stst: Nf6+ or Ne7+ both gains.
But Nf6+ more direct, N-sac:
24.Nf6+ gxN
25.RxR+ NxR
26.Re8+ Kg7
27.RxN and later Qf4, or Qxc5 to get to back rank, etc.24.Ne7+ RxN
25.Rxd8+ NxR
26.Rxe7 exerts pressure on back rank. |
|
Aug-17-17 | | agb2002: White is one pawn down.
The weakness of Black's back rank its underprotected castle suggest 24.Nf6+: A) 24... gxf6 25.Qg4+
A.1) 25... Kf8 26.Rxd8+ Ke7 (26... Nxd8 27.Bh6#) 27.Qg8, with an exchange ahead and the double threat Qe(f)8# and Rxc8, wins. A.2) 25... Kh8 26.Rxd8+ and mate next.
A.3) 25... Ng5 26.Rxd8+ Kg7 27.Rxc8 wins.
B) 24... Kf8 25.Rxd8+ Ke7 (25... Nxd8 26.Re8#) 26.Rxc8 Qxc8 27.Ne4 + - [B vs p]. C) 24... Kh8 25.Rxd8+ and mate next. |

Aug-17-17 | | jith1207: That was golden, <phony benoni> |
|
Aug-17-17 | | jith1207: I got the whole plan but I didn't see knight cannot make a check at e7., once I found the first move being f6 check during playback, then I was able to come up with right moves to mate. |

 | | Willber G: <ChessHigherCat: Looks like 24. Nf6+ is the most forcing move. If Kh8 then 25. Rxd8 Nxd8 Re8# which is too easy for a <Friday>> Thursday. |
|
Aug-17-17 | | malt: Got 24.Nf6+ gf6
(forced 24...Kf8 25.R:d8+ Ke7 26.Re8#)
Then went for 25.Qg4+ Ng5 26.R:d8+ Kg7
27.R:c8
Plan B. was
25.R:d8+ Kg7
(25...N:d8 26.Re8+ Kg7 27.Qh4)
26.Qh4 |

Aug-17-17 | | gofer: I didn't get yesterday's POTD, but today's is obvious to me for some reason... <24 Nf6+ ...>
24 ... Kh8
25 Rxd8+ Nxd8
26 Re8#
24 ... Kf8
25 Qxc5+!! Rd6 (Nxc5 26 Rxd8# or Re7 26 Rxd8+ Nxd8 27 Qxe7#) 26 Qxd6+ Re7
27 Qd8+ Nxd8 (Re8 28 Qxe8#)
28 Rxd8+ Re8
29 R(either)xe8#
<24 ... gxf6>
<25 Rxd8+ ...>
25 ... Nxd8
26 Re8+ Kg7
27 Qf4! mating
25 ... Kg7
26 Qh4! Ng5
27 Bxg5 mating

<malt: Got 24.Nf6+ gf6 (forced 24...Kf8 25.R:d8+ Ke7 26.Re8#)>. 26 Re8+ is not mate...
<24 Nf6+ Kf8 25 Rxd8+ Ke7 26 Re8+ Kd6> starts a VERY long complicated
sequence that took me far too long to work out. click for larger viewIn the end, I found <24 Nf6+ Kf8 25 Qxc5+> which is much cleaner!!! click for larger view |

Aug-17-17 | | patzer2: For today's Thursday puzzle (24. ?) solution I went with 24. Ne7+, visualizing at least the win of the exchange after 24...Rxe7 25. Rxd8+ Nxd8 26. Rxd7 +- (+8.26 @ 30 depth, Stockfish 8) or a crushing attack after 24...Kf8 25. Rxd8 Nxd8 25. Qxc5 +- (+4.08 @ 30 depth, Stockfish 8.) I looked at the stronger winning game move 24. Nf6+! +- (mate-in-six, Stockfish 8) but stopped calculating after 24...gxf6 25. Rxd8+
Nxd8 26. Re8+ Kg7 because 27. Rxd8 +- didn't look to be as strong a win as the 24. Ne7+ lines I had visualized. What I missed in my calculation was that, instead of grabbing material with 27. Rxd8 +-, Black has mate-in-three after 27. Qf4! Kg6 28. Qh6+ Kf5 29. Qh5#. Black's game starts to go bad after 18...Rxb2? 19. Nd5! ± (+0.78 @ 41 depth, Stockfish 8.) Instead, 18...Bb7! = to ⩱ (-0.23 @ 35 depth, Stockfish 8) gives Black a good game. Focusing on development, rather than grabbing pawns, is often a good idea. |

Aug-17-17 | | malt: <gofer> "Yes I wandered lonely as a cloud "
A re check come up with 24...Kf8 25.Q:c5+ (25...N:c5 26.R:d8#)
25...Re7 26.R:d8+ N:d8
27.Q:e7# |
|
Aug-17-17 | | saturn2: I was ok with 24 Ne7+ I looked at 24 Nf6 too but it seemed weaker to me because gxNf6 creates a luftloch. |
|
Aug-17-17 | | Marmot PFL: 24 Nxf6+ gf (forced) 25 Rxd8+ Nxd8 26 Re8+ kg7 looks like it should win due to exposed king and misplaced black pieces, didn't look long enough to see 27 Qf4 but even without that 27 Rxd8 should still win. |
|
Aug-17-17 | | lentil: Nf6 was the first move I looked at, even before seeing who was to move. Then after some flailing, I found the combo, except that I was going to play 27 Qg4??? not mate. |
