Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-11-07  waddayaplay: A nice win from Bäckman (2100-player) against GM Berg.
Jan-11-07  Runemaster: It looks like one of thse games where the higher-rated player took his opponent a bit lightly and regretted it.

Black's opening is a bit loose, particularly with the 'g' pawn advance in front of his own king.

If 18...Qxd6 19.Qg5+ gives perpetual check on g5 and h5. Black hoped for more. Against another GM, Black would probably have allowed the perpetual.

Jan-12-07  waddayaplay: Berg rarely allows perpetuals... which leads to several unnecessary losses. But maybe it is because of a wish to continue the battle, a love for the game.

See for example
Timman vs E Berg, 2006

or E Berg vs B Ahlander, 2003

Jan-18-07  waddayaplay: Correction: His name is Backman, not Bäckman as I wrote above.
Feb-19-09  Magnusch: Michael Backman! Well done! I remember your first win against Emanuel. Have you ever lost against him?

Glöm inte VEM som lärde dig spelet och utvecklade din talang o s v. Det var du själv! Ungefär som Magnus Carlsen. Hoppas du får spela mot honom någon gång. Peace of cake for you? Lycka till!

Dec-06-09  SicilianPoweR: wow i can't believe my own chess teacher is on a site like this one! His rating is 2172 just so you know.
