Jan-13-07  Hesam7: At least Kramnik's game lasted 33 moves. What a chicken this Topalov guy ;-)
Jan-13-07  Eyal: I think Motylev missed some really good chances here by not playing 23...Bd8.

Jan-13-07  McCool: In the Van Wely-Radjabov game there are four pawns on the e-file!
Jan-13-07  square dance: who wants to check to see the number of motylev's moves that matched with fritz 10s top choice?
Jan-13-07  DCP23: <square dance: who wants to check to see the number of motylev's moves that matched with fritz 10s top choice?>

The satanic Mr. Danailov?

Jan-13-07  chessmoron: <Per: One can disslike Topa as much as one wants, but you have to give him cred: he NEVER accepts short draws!!> WRONG! What the hell is this crap, then.
Jan-13-07  positionalgenius: <chessmoron>Thats what I've been saying for months...
Jan-13-07  syracrophy: Unforgivable. Everybody's offering draw (The WC and the former WC) What a shame!

JointheArmy: What the hell is up with f3? That's a 1st category move making the bishop crap or having inferior structure for rest of the game.
Jan-13-07  Calli: I vote that we offer a draw to Yuri :-)

chancho: Veselin Topalov, Maestro de Tablas.
Jan-13-07  Bob726: Topalov can't even beat the lowest rated player in Corus with the white pieces? There is NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO way he wins this tournment.
Jan-13-07  acirce: Kasparov vs Motylev, 2004
Jan-13-07  badest: This not so typical of Topalov. Too many draws the first day... and only one exciting game (in group A). Hope tomorrows games are much better.

I mean 5 draws in under 30 moves (and the "long" one, 33 moves by Kramnik). Sad.

Jan-13-07  Bob726: Even though Motylev can get a draw against two players sometimes, you would except more of a winning effore try by topalov. He seemed he like was happy with a draw the way he played in the game. He draw in only 24 moves with a player 150 elo points behind him. Kasaprov at least made a winning effort and drew in 71 moves.
Jan-13-07  Bob726: Sorry for my bad spelling, i am in a hurry.
Jan-13-07  Akavall: <Bob726> Right, I believe Kasparov actually missed a win against Motylev. I was surprised that Motylev was able to equalize so easily against Topalov.
Jan-13-07  badest: A very nice game by Motylev. Thanks <acirce>.
Jan-14-07  alicefujimori: Honestly, the Slav is really a tough nut to crack at that level, especially in this "slow" Slav variation. White got the 2 bishops, but the position is not open enough to be able to make use of that. Kramnik used a similiar line to this game against Shirov back in Astana 2001 (if I remember correctly) and the only reason why Kramnik won that game was because Shirov unnecessarily opened up the position and allowed white to make use of his two bishops.
Jan-14-07  square dance: topalov might want to think about 1.e4 for a while.
Jan-14-07  BishopofBlunder: Dull as dishwater...
Jan-14-07  refutor: it's sad that the "biggest" theoretical advances the topalov-kramnik match produced were in the 1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.e3 Bf5 line, taking the fun out of the slav/semi-slav (for both sides). 4.e3 avoids the slav proper, but 4. ...Bf5 is an implicit draw offer IMPO (in my patzer opinion)
Jan-14-07  Raskolnikov: I think Motylev as a former second of Kramnik in his battle in Elista was well prepared against d4 from Topalov. I doubt he would had more difficulties with 1.e4.
Jan-14-07  acirce: Yeah, and just like Kramnik Motylev also plays the Petrov a lot. Topalov doesn't do very well against the Petrov and it won't help that his opponent has been working with Kramnik. I was also thinking that perhaps it was psychologically hard for Topalov to play against a member of Kramnik's team no matter the opening.
Jan-14-07  Caissanist: Motylev played for a draw and got it. Topalov recognized that he had nothing in the final position and decided not to play "for the loss", . A sign of increasing maturity and objectivity on Topalov's part, it seems to me.
