Jan-20-07  Ulhumbrus: 13 b3 invites the pawn attack ..a5 and ...a4, just as the g6 pawn invites h4 and h5.
Jan-20-07  uniqueid: why not 46..Rh4 ?
Jan-20-07  sharkw: If 46...Rh4 simply:

47. a6 h2 (47...Rh7 48. Rb8+) 48. a7 h1=Q (48...Ra4 49. Rh3) 49. Rb8+ Kg7 50. a8=Q and even though Black queened first, he will lose to a mating attack if he doesn't exchange queens. After 50...Qxa8 51. Rxa8 a similar ending to the game will be reached and White's two pawns should beat Black's g-pawn after the g5 pawn is captured.

Jan-20-07  sheaf: van wely is trying to expand his repertoire he has played najdorf against 1e4 throughout the corus against the elite which is very good thing deserves appreciation hope people dont criticize him unnecessarily
Jan-20-07  tud: I like to see Bobby's h3 after many years doing the job
Jan-20-07  nescio: <sheaf: van wely is trying to expand his repertoire he has played najdorf against 1e4 throughout the corus>

It's not that he never played it:

Jan-21-07  Mameluk: This endgame is much more complicated than I thought and Van Wely makes many instructive mistakes.

34...a5? After waiting move like Rd8 black should hold. 43...h4? Computers and Shipov say 43...Rxa4 is a clear draw, but is it? After 44. Kb3 Rf4 white plays 45. c4 h4 46. Rd5 h3 47. Rd2 with some chances.

And now the instructive part. Black should not move his g-pawn at all, that does not help. R+a+c vs. R is a draw, though not easy, and Van Wely must only get his king back. So 49...Ke6! and even 50...Ra8! 51. c5 Ke6 52. Rd3 g4 and black has good drawing chances (Shipov).

And even whenI thought Van Wely should finally resign and free me from the computer screen, he makes a final mistake with another useless pawn move. 59...g3? Should have been played 59...Rc2! (Mig) and after 60. a5 Rb2+ 61. Ka6 Rc2 62. Kb7 Rb2+ 63. Kc7 Ra2 is a draw. So white must find 60. Ra1 and should win somehow, 60...g3 61. a5 g2 62. a6 Rb2+ 63. Kc5 Rc2+ 64. Kb6 Rb2+ 65. Kc7 Kf3 66. Rg1! Ra2 67. Kb7 Rb2+ 68. Kc8 wins. But white can still find a draw:) for example 66. a7 Ra2 67. Rxa2 g1Q 68. a8Q?? (Ra6!! should still win) Qg7+ and perpetual. So it was Van Wely´s computer-like g-pawn pushing, which cost him the game.

Honza Cervenka: <R+a+c vs. R is a draw> It's draw only if the King is not cut off the pawns. See J Lechtynsky vs Gulko, 1978 for an example.
