Phony Benoni: "Over here where I can get at you!"
Jan-12-15  lost in space: I love Mondays!

25...Rxc1+ 26. Kxc1 (only move) 26...Qa1#

offramp: Two Erics. Probably a first.
Jan-12-15  Gregor Samsa Mendel: There's something to be said for developing one's pieces.
Jan-12-15  greed and death: Mondays are so easy...

25... Rxc1+
26. Kxc1 Qa1#

Jan-12-15  diagonalley: white's position is simply AWFUL... maybe he was a 5-year old playing in a simul(?)
Jan-12-15  Oxspawn: Black shoots, white parries, black scores direct from the corner. 25. Rxc1+
26. Kxc1 Qa1#
Jan-12-15  stst: 25...... Rxc1+
26.Kxc1 Qa1#

too easy?
looks like no other lines possible...

Jan-12-15  stst: White's Qa4 and Kd1 are two consecutive blunders that led to the Rxc1 tragedy

The White Q should guard the back rank, and the K should move away the center, towards the h file.

Jan-12-15  agb2002: Black has a bishop and a knight for the bishop pair.

If White's dark square bishop disappeared then Black would deliver mate with ... Qa1#. Hence, 25... Rxc1+ 26.Kxc1 Qa1#.

Jan-12-15  M.Hassan: It's mate in two for this Monday:
25..........Rxc1+
26.Kxc1(forced) Qa1#

An Englishman: Good Evening: The losing move could have been 13.Qc2, not foreseeing that after 13...b6! Black's d-pawn will advance, cut White's position in two, and choke the King. Black had already equalized thanks to his strong and defensible center, but 13.d3 might have improved, retraining the Black pawn center.
Jan-12-15  patzer2: Not a big fan of the Polish, as I think Black is fully equal, if not better, in this game by the second move.

However, Fritz gives the losing move as 13. Qc2? allowing 13...b5! trapping the Rook.

In the final position, the simple decoy 25...Rxc1+ 26. Kxc1 Qa1# initiates the quickest of numerous Black winning options.

Jan-12-15  stacase: Over the board you would have been setting this thing up and 25...Rc1 would have been nearly instantaneous but presented as a puzzle you have to look for a few seconds to make sure it all works. And then BAM!
Jan-12-15  morfishine: 25...Rxc1+ 26.Kxc1 Qa1 mate

Its fun to see the Polish Opening from time-to-time in the POTD, but not like this

*****

Jan-12-15  Nick46: A darn sight easier than last Monday's.
Jan-12-15  pedro99: if you were in time trouble you might hurriedly play ..Qf2 and still slaughter him.
Jan-12-15  pedro99: I must confess I used to play the Sokolsky (Polish) in the fond hope that I could circumvent my opponent's hard worked opening research. It has some logic to it. Think of those times you have struggled and failed to engineer .b4 in Q side openings. There are plenty of good ways of addressing it alas.
Jan-12-15  Once: There is a sort of logic to the Polish/ Sokolosky opening. Sort of. White argues that he is playing a hypermodern opening. He allows black to build a big centre which he will then undermine from the wings and from a distance.

And there's a sort of logic to some of white's early middle game play. He starts offensive manoeuvres with Na4, Rc1 and Nc5 before he has castled. If you can get your attack in first you may not need to castle - or you can delay castling until you have made some strong positional gains.

That's the theory. And as theories go, it's a theory.

The problem is that while white has been doing all this, black has been playing a few moves of his own. He has castled, occupied the centre and put his pieces on aggressive squares. His pawns have enjoyed some gratuitous rook kicking.

The net result is that white has ended up with his king trapped in the centre underneath a monster black pawn on d3. What is worse, he can't easily develop his kingside pieces. Towards the end black has a constant threat of Qe5+/Qe2# if white moves his Bf1.

The two move Monday mate is a blessed relief when it falls.

Jan-12-15  zb2cr: A Rook sacrifice to start the week! 25. ... Rxc1+; 26. Kxc1, Qa1#.
Jan-12-15  Cheapo by the Dozen: I used to play Larsen's opening (1 b3), but I never saw the point of the Polish.

The sacs on Monday are getting smaller...
Jan-12-15  whiteshark: 25...Rxc1+ and white is parr-cooked.
Jan-12-15  wooden nickel: I think this could also be considered a transposed Anderssen's Opening (1.a3), at any rate Sokolsky always played 2.Bb2. White should have followed the saying <"Castle early and often!">, in this position there aren't too many moves that do not win!

Penguincw: Never saw this game before, but I got it. :D

Not sure if it's certain, but if black wants to "torture" white, 25...Qa1 26.Ke1 Qxc1+ 27.Kf2 Qxd2+ 28.Kg1 Qe3+ 29.Kg2 Rc2+ also seems playable.
