Nov-30-08 | | Autoreparaturwerkbau: I'm sure Mundt was readily satisfied with himself, netting a clear pawn against Rubinstein (15...Rxe5?), thinking "ain't that a tricky pin there, haha!". Rubinstein threw pieces all over the place after that. Mundt went open mouth. |

Jun-16-09 | | YoungEd: At first I thought "7. ...c6??? what's up with that?" Of course, I missed that Black regains the piece with 8. ♕b6+. Still, maybe one ?, because it puts the queen off-side and wastes a bit of time.
Rubinstein's wins are as beautiful as anyone's. |

BLACK TO PLAY
In this position Black rushed to regain his piece by means of 8...Qb6+ (?). It would have been much better to recover his piece with 8...a5! 9.Nd3 d5 10.exd5 cxd5 11.Bb3 Qb6+ 12.Kh1 a4 13.Bxa4 Rxa4 with an unclear game

May-16-23 | | jrredfield: I saw 17 Rxf7+ Kxf7 18 Qh5+ Rf1+ 19 Rf1+ Rf5 20 Bxf5 and then perhaps Black staving off mate with something like 20 ... Qxd4+. So there goes the Black Queen and I think mate is pretty obvious very quickly. |
|
May-16-23 | | Brenin: 17 Rxf7+, and if Kxf7 then 18 Qh5+ Ke6 19 Qe8+ with mate in a few moves. |
|
May-16-23 | | mel gibson: Easy peasy.
Stockfish 15 says mate in 9:
17. Rxf7+
(17. Rxf7+ (Rf1xf7+ Kf8xf7 Qd1-h5+ Kf7-f8 Ra1-f1+ Re5-f5 Bh7xf5 Bc8xf5 Rf1xf5+ Kf8-g8 Qh5-e8+ Kg8-h7
Rf5-f8 Qb6xd4+ c3xd4 g7-g6 Qe8-e7+) +M9/78 28) |
|
May-16-23 | | Brenin: The combination actually starts a move earlier, with 16 Bxh7+ Kf8 (if Kxh7 or Kh8 then 17 Qh5 wins). After 17 Rxf7+ Black has Ke8 but then 19 Qh5 Rxg5 20 Re1+ wins. |
|
May-16-23 | | jrredfield: Sorry I meant 18 ... Kf8 for Black's response to 18 Qh5+. |
|
May-16-23 | | Refused: 17.Rxf7+ Kxf7 18.Qh5+ to get the party started, or to end it. The bishops and the other rook just kill the king. a) 18...g6 19.Qxg6+ Kf8 20.Qg8#
b)18...Kf8 19.Rf1+ Rf5 (or Bf5 doesn'T really matter) 20.Bg6! looks cleanest. I am not entirely sure what's the best way to end it quick after 17...Ke8 I'd probably recycle 18...Bg6 again, as the discovered checks with those two Bishops look incredibly powerful. |

 | | al wazir: 17. Qf3 also wins: 17...f6 18. Bxf6 gxf6 19. Qxf6+ Ke8 20. Qf8+ Kd7 21. Rf7+. Or 17...Be6 18. Bf4 Nd7 19. Bxe5 Nxe5 20. Qe3. |

 | | perfidious: This is no Tuesday POTD, but has enough sidelines to make things more deceptive, though the main line is straightforward enough. <----world's worst typist |
|
May-16-23 | | jrredfield: <al wazir: 17. Qf3 also wins> Yes and so do all of these moves for White's 17th move (they all score at least +8 in my engine tests): Qh5 (mate in 14), Bg6, Bf4, h4, Qd3, Qc1, Bh4, Qd2 I agree with <perfidious>. There are so many successful lines for White that I really don't see what stands out as the POTD solution to look for. |
|
May-16-23 | | agb2002: White has the bishop pair for a bishop and a knight. Black threatens Rxg5.
The black king is defenseless. This suggests 17.Rxf7+: A) 17... Kxf7 18.Qh5+
A.1) 18... Ke6 19.Qe8+ Kd6 20.Qxe5+ Kd7 21.Qe7# (or 21.Bf5#). A.2) 18... Kf8 19.Rf1+
A.2.a) 19... Bf5 20.Bxf5
A.2.a.i) 20... Rxf5+ 21.Rxf5+ Kg8 22.Qe8+ Kh7 23.Rf8 and mate follows (23... g6 24.Rf7#). A.2.a.ii) 20... Kg8 21.Qh7+ and mate soon.
A.2.b) 19... Rf5 20.Bxf5 as above.
A.3) 18... g6 19.Qxg6+ Kf8 20.Qg8#.
B) 17... Ke8 18.Rxg7 wins (18... Rxg5 19.Qe2+ and mate in two). |

|
May-16-23 | | saturn2: 17.Rxf7 is not hard to see. Besides 17.Bf4 wins cause the Re5 haa no good square to go. |
|
May-16-23 | | stacase: 18.Qh5+ and Black has three choices or so I thought. I didn't consider resignation (-: Well anyway my policy is to always accept a resignation and stop worrying about what if he does this or that? After it was all over I finally saw that White's d4 Pawn was pinned. Hopefully over the board I would noticed ʅ_(ツ)_ʃ |

Qf8+ Kh7 25. Rf7 Kg6 26. Qxg7+ Kh5 27. Qh6#. If Ke8 18. Qf3 Rxg5 19. Re1+ Kd8 20. Qe3 Bd7 21. Qxg5+ Kc8 22. Rf8+ Kc7 23. Qd8+ Kd6 24. Qe7+ Kc7 25. Qe5#. There are similar variants. |
