  jessicafischerqueen:

<FSR> I was thinking the same thing. The pun is a line from Bob Dylan's "Forever Young," but what is the connection between Dylan and either of these players?

I also wondered why black played on so long in an obviously lost endgame that would be trivial for a C-Category club player.

An Englishman: Good Evening: Can't figure out today's title either. Best part of the game consisted of the opening; White did well to nurture his tiny initiative until Black erred with 17...Rc8.
Feb-27-21  laskereshevsky: Hogarty died very young, at 19Yo maybe the pun is related to this

Feb-27-21  Honey Blend: Instead of ... ♘e4, 18. ... b5 hits back at the bishop. After 19. ♗b3 c5 and then ... c4 gains a fair amount of space for Black and should be enough compensation for the pawn.

OhioChessFan: Dylan could write a great song, but when it came to singing, he could write a great song.

I thought maybe Dylan cribbed a Krishna statement but I can't find one.

Breunor: For the meaning of the pun, I think we should refer to here:

https://en.chessbase.com/post/phili...

We see this quote:

Phil, a brilliant chess player, truly one of the greatest people that I have ever met, not just my best friend, but my brother. You will be missed beyond belief. Chess will never be the same again.

You were one of the best things to happen to Irish chess and each and every one of your many friends. Remember friendship never dies, it just freezes in it’s prime.

You will never be forgotten.
Rest in peace Phil – FOREVER YOUNG

Karl McPhillips

Feb-27-21  thegoldenband: <laskereshevsky> and <Breunor> have it, yes. (I'm not Karl McPhillips, though -- it's just a happy coincidence that we opted for the same language, unless I once read that article and have since forgotten.)

I also thought the closing moves were ever so slightly reminiscent of Dylan's "ladder to the stars", with the White king and pawns climbing toward the top of the board.

R.I.P. to Phil Hogarty.

That too.

I see that some people have managed to figure out the significance of the pun, so thank you for that. But the guy died 15 years ago, so now seems an odd time to honor him. And the game is a big meh. Is this his greatest effort, young Hogarty's gold coins game?
