FSR: Leaving aside the ridiculous opening, I don't understand this game at all. Why not 18.dxe4?
Jul-08-08  erasmus: <Why not 18.dxe4?> I think it is because of 18...Rxf1+ 19. Kxf1 (19. Qxf1 would lead to Qxg3+ followed by mate) Rf8+ 20. Ke1 after which both Bf2+ and Rf2 look strong. Bf2+ wins the queen for the bishop and the rook and after Rf2 the same might happen or black will get a decisive attack.
Aug-31-08  DoctorD: This is the Jerome Gambit.
Aug-31-08  whiteshark: See also <Old Kentucky> game NN vs Blackburne, 1880 with some more analysis... :D
Sep-01-08  Calli: <This is the Jerome Gambit.>

Aha! That must be why "Italian Game: Jerome Gambit" is just below the player names at the top of the page. :-)

Sep-01-08  DoctorD: Funny..... Yes, didn't think of that was responding mainly to FSR's "ridiculous opening" comment.
Sep-01-08  ILikeFruits: shinkman's shink is shinking...
a nonsensical pun...
but a pun nonetheless...

Phony Benoni: The gambit did not present Shinkman with a problem.
Jan-09-10  WhiteRook48: whatever happened to 6 d4?
May-14-16  kereru: Alonzo Wheeler Jerome was born 150 years too soon, obviously you can't play this opening in a cc game against a very competent player (and famous problem composer) like Shinkman, but it's perfect for online bullet games.
May-31-20  Captain Hindsight: I hear from a good source

that <"Jerome"> was Morphy's troll account.

Sep-16-21  Ichika: Ah yes. "The Jerome Gambit".

One of the greatest Gambits of all time.

eternaloptimist: Wow other than 4.♗xf7+? this game was played very accurately even tho it was played way back in 1874! Shinkman did an excellent job of getting the win!
