Nov-07-13  alllexiss: why resign ?
Nov-07-13  mrsaturdaypants: Taking the rook looks disastrous. If 18. cxd5, then 19. Qxb5+ Kf8 20. Qxb7 and black's down material and nearly helpless.

He can instead just accept the loss of his knight, maybe playing a5 to try to denude white's king. But unless white totally inept at getting his king side pieces into play, he should be able to make his extra piece tell.

Nov-08-13  SoUnwiseTheKnight B4: 19.Qb5+ and you can say the 'stig is up'

  offramp: Dump of the Stig.
Dec-08-21  Cheapo by the Dozen: I'm not getting the pun, because I don't know what a "stig" is.
Dec-08-21  Cheapo by the Dozen: Black is crushed after Qb5+/Qxb7 because he can't connect his rooks to defend them and his king is horribly exposed.

Note that White's DSB covers what otherwise might be an escape square at g7.

Dec-08-21  Brenin: <Cheapo>: "Stig of the Dump" is a classic children's novel, about a boy who meets a caveman called "Stig" (= "wanderer"?).

al wazir: This Carlsen kid was only 15, but he played a pretty good game. Whatever became of him?
Dec-08-21  ASchultz: @OhioChessFan it's probably more popular in the UK where it was originally published. I was fortunate enough to be exposed to it when I was young. I do recommend it. It's not very long, and I enjoyed rereading it as an adult.
Dec-08-21  Teyss: <al wazir: This Carlsen kid was only 15, but he played a pretty good game. Whatever became of him?> Latest news is, he's doing exhibition games in Dubai.

<offramp> Good one, yes Stig got dumped. Interesting miniature too.

Dec-08-21  AlicesKnight: 16. ... Qe7 perhaps keeps afloat, but the R sac seems to come out of thin air. The pun is pleasing except that "the Stig" has been a character in UK TV's popular "Top Gear" car series, and a 'dump' associated with him has a very different meaning now ...
Dec-08-21  GlennOliver: Kudos to offramp for the pun.
Dec-08-21  karban: < This Carlsen kid was only 15> I think he was not even 13, given the date.
