Outrated by 500 points, White is still ready to slug it out. Black's ...d4 has opened a dangerous diagonal, but White plunges ahead with <16.exf6 dxc3 17.fxg7>, ready to promote if his queen is captured.

Black instead inserts <17...Qd4+>. White can avoid the worst with 18.Qf2, but goes with his plan by playing <18.Nf2>, ready for 18...cxd2 19.Bxd4.

However, after <18...Qxg7 19.Bxc3>:
