chessgames.com: Welcome to the fifth Chessgames Grandmaster Challenge, in which a single person will attempt to defeat (or simply survive) the awesome combined power of the Chessgames World Team.

For this game we have recruited none other than the 13th World Correspondence Champion, Mikhail Markovich Umansky.

For those unfamiliar, GM Umansky was the USSR correspondence champion in 1978, and the world correspondence champion in 1995. He also placed first in the "ICCF World Champion Jubilee", a special invitational correspondence tournament involving all former ICCF World Champions.

He currently resides in Germany, and is prepared to take this game, like all chess he plays, quite seriously.

The draw for colors took place in the Chessgames office and Umansky received the white pieces for his first game. (We have already offered him a rematch scheduled for 2010 or 2011, in which case of course he will get the Black pieces.)

This game will begin on February 1st. In the meantime, introduce yourself to your team mates and get ready for what may be the most challenging Chessgames Challenge to date. Good luck!

Jan-22-09  Ziggurat: Looking forward to an epic battle with one of the real correspondence chess greats!

  Stonehenge: BTW thanks <CG> :)
Jan-22-09  TommyC: On top of the chessgames gloss, I see that our opponent is also an International Master OTB, rated 2467...
Jan-22-09  weisyschwarz: So the World will be fighting battles in two theaters. Why the rush to this game? Is there a reason we cannot finish the other game first?
Jan-22-09  lost in space: So an other battle where we have the black pieces
Jan-22-09  Kwesi: Wohoo 27th player...

Lets take his Catalan apart and completely destroy it (in the nicest possible way)

sleepyirv: <weisyschwarz> I assume we're playing on Umansky's schedule. Or cg.com has some nefarious motives.
Jan-22-09  belgradegambit: I thought we'd have white this time but I guess it was the luck of the draw.
Jan-22-09  dotsamoht: To repeat what I informed <kutztown36> of in his forum, I will not have time to be the Sticky updater for this game.

I call on someone to volunteer for this important task. <kutz> reports the forums after each move and the Sticky updater puts the new information into the Sticky.

Jan-22-09  benjinathan: He looks like a pure 1.d4 player.
Jan-22-09  hms123: Let's not play the Sicilian this time.
Jan-22-09  Eurotrash: Black again. Dammit. Lets hope for a Nimzo-indian then.
Jan-22-09  patzer2: Our performance against GMAN convinces me we don't do so well trying to defend closed (or semi-closed) and cramped positions, where our opponent maintains a small but lasting advantage in space, pawn structure and piece placement.

As such, against 1. d4 I think we should avoid the King's Indian. We had enough trouble trying to defend the Sicilian, so against 1. e4 I like 1...e5 to give us more space and an easier time equalizing. Closed/semi-closed positions IMO play to our opponent's strength and not ours.

We're back to 3 days per half-move and look at the rollover time!

Jan-22-09  imag: <benjinathan: He looks like a pure 1.d4 player.>

And he loves to fianchoetto his LSB. That probably means the Catalan.

Jan-22-09  kellmano: He looks a bit like a James Bond villain. I say KID. I'm pretty sure it will one day be analysed to a win for black.
Jan-22-09  Eurotrash: <kellmano> Until that day comes, I think we should choose an opening that doesn't allow white to place two pawns in the centre.
Jan-22-09  weisyschwarz: I say 1...d5 as well, with eye to some sort of Slav.
Jan-22-09  imag: 1. d4 d5 2. c4 c6 3. Nf3 Nf6 4. Nc3 e6

GM Umansky plays 5.g3 here:

which strikes me as a slightly inferior move. Should we take advantage of that?

Jan-22-09  kwid: Hello!

For a starter, I would like to tell you my chess experience and hope to get to know yours.

I may have interacted with some of you on the internet who have taken part in various encounters from Fritz,Shredder to GM Nickel challenge games.

For those of you who have serious intentions to help us hopefully defeating our opponent, I would appreciate to get to know your chess view or ambitions to become the next world champion or runner up.

I am from Austria. Played OTB on board one as a Junior and in the Senior Masterclass including Switzerland. Played CC in Canada achieved ICCF title SIM 2560, winner of the CCCA OPEN and Closed Championship. I am inactive since 1995 and carry no elo rating.

I wish you all a pleasant experience and opportunity to make new chess friends.

Good Luck!

Jan-22-09  firebrandx: I'd love to get a Nimzo or queen's indian, but if he plays catalan, we'll have to prepare for that. I'd like to play 1...Nf6 against his 1. d4, and I agree that we should try for the Ruy if he plays 1. e4.
