Kibitzer's Corner
Feb-10-22  Brenin: 27 Rxd7+ Kxd7 (Qxd7 28 Qxf6+ Ke8 or Kf8 29 Qxh8+ Ke7 30 Qxe5+ wins a piece) 28 Nxf6+ Ke6 (if 28 ... Ke7 29 Nd5+ wins the Q, while 28 ... Kd8 or Kc8 allow 29 Qxa8+, and 28 ... Kd6 allows 29 Rd1+ with similar continuations) 29 Qf5+ Kd6 (29 ... Ke6 30 Nd5+) 30 Rd1+ Kc5 (30 ... Kc6 31 Qe4+) 31 Nd7+ Kc6 32 Qe4 mate.
Feb-10-22  TheaN: Okay, <Brenin>, this time I submit. Everything's covered, I have nothing to add.
Feb-10-22  raymondhow: At first I was suspicious of 27.Rxd7+, seemed too obvious for Thursday. But then I saw the mating net, or else black would give back the rook or lose his queen. Nice to start a week 4 for 4, it's been awhile.
Feb-10-22  Brenin: 27 Rxd7+ Kxd7 seemed obvious, but my first thought for a follow-up was 28 Qf5+ Kc6 30 Qxf6+ Kb7 31 Nd6+ Kb6 32 Ne8+, hitting the Black Q; however, 32 ... Qc6 blocks the check and saves the Q, leaving White the exchange down. Fortunately, 28 Nxf6+ is a better alternative.
Feb-10-22  mel gibson: I chose 27. Rhd1 to double up White's Rooks -
which according to Stockfish still wins.

Stockfish 14 followed the game line which is the best move:

27. Rxd7+

(27. Rxd7+ (♖d6xd7+ ♔e7xd7 ♘e4xf6+ ♔d7-c8 ♕f3xa8+ ♕c7-b8 ♕a8-c6+ ♕b8-c7 ♕c6xb5 ♕c7-b7 ♕b5-c4+ ♕b7-c7 ♕c4-e4 ♖h8-d8 ♘f6-d5 ♕c7-c5 ♖h1-d1 ♔c8-b8 ♕e4xe5+ ♕c5-d6 ♕e5-e4 ♔b8-a7 ♕e4-e3+ ♔a7-b7 ♕e3-f3 ♔b7-a7 ♕f3-f2+ ♔a7-b8 ♕f2xf7 ♖d8-f8 ♕f7-g7 h6-h5 g4xh5 ♖f8-c8 ♕g7-d4 ♖c8-f8 ♔c1-b1 ♖f8-f5 ♕d4-g4 ♖f5-f7 ♕g4-e4 ♖f7-b7 h5-h6 ♕d6xh6 ♘d5-e7 ♕h6-h5 ♖d1-d8+ ♔b8-c7) +18.93/37 664)

score for White +18.93 depth 37.

Forcing Stockfish 14 to play my choice:

27. Rhd1

score for Black -11.41 depth 35.

Feb-10-22  agb2002: White is one pawn down.

Black threatens Rxa2.

The black knight protects f6. This suggests 27.Rxd7+ (27.Rxf6 Raf8) 27... Kxd7 (27... Qxd7 28.Qxf6+ Ke(f)8 29.Qxh8+ Ke7 30.Qxa8 wins decisive material) 28.Nxf6+ (28.Rd1+ Kc8):

A) 28... Kc(d)8 29.Qxa8+ wins a piece at least.

B) 28... Ke7 29.Nd5+ wins decisive material.

C) 28... Ke6 29.Qf5+ Kd6 (29... Ke7 30.Nd5+) 30.Rd1+

C.1) 30... Kc6 31.Qe4+ Kc5 (31... Kb6 32.Nd5+) 32.Nd7+ Qxd7 (forced) 33.Rxd7 wins decisive material.

C.2) 30... Kc5 31.Nd7+ Qxd7 (31... Kc6 32.Qe4#) 32.Rxd7 wins decisive material.

D) 28... Kd6 29.Rd1+

D.1) 29... Kc5 30.Nd7+ as in C.1.

D.2) 29... Ke7 30.Nd5+ as in B.

D.3) 29... Ke6 30.Qf5+ Ke7 31.Nd5+ wins decisive material.

Feb-10-22  saturn2: 27.Rxd7+ Kxd7 (Qxd7 worse)

Now there are some checks possible .
28.Rd1+ is much better than 28.Qf5+ but not as strong as 28.Nf6+

Feb-10-22  saturn2: 8...Qa5 is a loss of tempo. At this square the queen can be chased away.
Feb-10-22  Stanco: 27.Rxd7+ Kxd7
28.Nxf6+ Ke6
(if 27...Ke7 28.Nd5+, if 27...K8 28.Qa8+ takes both rooks) 29.Qf5+ Kd6
30.Rd1+ Kc5
31.Qf2+ Kc6 (when I was calculating (for some reason?) I missed I already have 31.Nd7+ here) 32.Qf3+ Kc5
33.Nd7+
(or 32...Ke7 33.Nxd5+)
Feb-10-22  Cellist: I wanted to follow up with 28. Qxf6, preparing 29. Rd1+. It wins, too, but much less clearly. Here is the engine's line after 28. Qxf6: 1) +1.87 (27 ply) 28...Rhd8 29.Rd1+ Kc8 30.Rxd8+ Qxd8 31.Qc6+ Kb8 32.Nd6 Ra7 33.Qxb5+ Ka8 34.Qxb4 Rd7 35.Nf5 f6 36.a4 Rd1+ 37.Kb2 Ka7 38.h5 Ka6 39.Qb5+ Ka7 40.Qc5+ Kb7 41.Qe3 Qd2 42.Qxd2 Rxd2 43.Kc3 Rd7 44.Nxh6 Rd4 45.b4 Rf4 46.Kb3 e4 47.c3 e3 48.Kc2 Re4 49.Kd1 e2+ 50.Ke1
Feb-10-22  stacase: 27.Rxd7+ and it’s a question of how can White. NOT win?

Feb-10-22  Refused: 27.Rxd7+ is removing the key defender that holds the black position together.

27...Kxd7 (27...Qxd7 28.Qxf6+) Pretty much any reasonable checking move leaves white better. Cleanest is probably

28.Nxf6+ Ke6 (Kd6 29.Rd1+) 29.Qf5+ Kd6 30.Rd1+ Kc5 31.Qf2+ Kc6 32.Qf3+ kc5 33.Nd7+

30...Kc6 31.Qf3+ is basically the same line

Fusilli: <stacase: 27.Rxd7+ and it’s a question of how can White. NOT win?> The point is not to just see the first move but to foresee that the right continuation to 27...Kxd7 is 28.Nxf6+ and not 28.Rd1+ (which, though still good, is more laborious).
Feb-10-22  Hercdon: Nice & easy forced mate in just a few, sorta easy for a Thursday
Feb-10-22  Brenin: <Hercdon>: It's not really a <forced mate in just a few>, but rather a forced mate or significant material loss in just a few. For example, after 27 Rxd7+ Black can avoid mate with 27 ... Kxd7 28 Nf6+ Kc8 29 Qxa8+ Qb8 30 Qc6+ Qc7 31 Qxb5; there is no immediate forced mate, but Black is down by N+P with a hopeless position.
