Kibitzer's Corner
May-24-09  piatos blue: It should be 109. ... Bd4. Am I right?
May-25-09  Gilmoy: Gelfand having fun with one Rook! His king, with crazed eyes and a berserker's heart, sallies forth and haveth at thee!

<piatos blue: 109..Bd4> 110.Rh6+. <107..Nxa6 108.Kb6> is the same fork and Rook skewer.

Gelfand coolly ignored Najer's evil-looking twins, knowing he always had the right piece (LSB) to stalemate Two Connected Passers of the Si(x)th. He cleverly used those tempi to squeeze Najer into a configuration where his B and N could not defend each other. Berserker king sheaths his sword, draws out a table knife in his right hand, reties his pennant into a bib, shows his left hand empty, and Najer mutters, <That pun is so ... juvenile.>

Backtracking, the winning move looks like <104.Rh7!> with nigh-zugzwang. Since Black's Nc6 is already defending the Ba7 now, it follows that after any move by either one, they'll be unchained, and King-forkable: 104..Bc5 105.Rh6+ K(c,d)7 106.Kd5.

May-25-09  dovif: 109 ... BD4
