May-24-09  zluria: Woohoo! Go Gelfand, you're the best! Check out Gelfand vs Svidler, 2009 and Svidler vs Gelfand, 2009 for examples of: How to win a totally lost game. Doing this twice in a row against a top GM isn't just luck and nerves. Gelfand creates problems for his opponent because of his great fighting spirit!

May-24-09  timhortons: Svidler did not win a game!

Gelfland is the winner.

May-24-09  returnoftheking: quite unexpected winner indeed.
May-24-09  WhiteRook48: a bit too unexpected
May-24-09  BushWhacker: Congrats to Gelfand!
Good performance and really convincing wins all along the tournament.
May-25-09  zluria: Unexpected?! Man, what does Gelfand have to do to get some recognition?? He's the top rated player here (according to liveratings at least), and among all the players here, he was closest to being World Champion. Only one game stood between him and the title at Mexico 2007. Wake up! Gelfand is the man!
May-25-09  firebyrd: < Man, what does Gelfand have to do to get some recognition?? He's the top rated player here >

Apart from the minor detail that Jakovenko seems to be top rated, I do agree about the strange lack of recognition.

Look at Gelfand's rating graph:
http://ratings.fide.com/id.phtml?ev... - and compare it to other 40-year old players, like for instance Adams: http://ratings.fide.com/id.phtml?ev...

May-25-09  returnoftheking: I expected Svidler to win. Not as good in the opening as Gelfand maybe, but a big talent and very good at rapid. Bravo for Gelfand-but hey I am surprised.
