Jun-30-09  whiteshark: A great last round struggle of these two super-strong engines.

With a win Junior would have secured 1st place, a draw was fine for a sole 2nd place, but things went different ....

<25.bxc4> I think most human would have re-taken the pawn with a heavy piece. To transform 2 connected pawns into an isolated double (passed) pawn is a surprise twist.

The critical position seems to be after <42.c4>,

when <42...Qc7> was probably not the best answer. I leave it to you/your engine to analyse it in depth ....

Jimfromprovidence: I think black can apply serious pressure and force a draw out of white.

I’m looking at 42…Qa4 as an improvement, threatening Rxc4, then Rxc2.

In response, 43 c5 looks forced. Now, after 43…Rxc5, to prevent the loss of the knight, white luckily has 44 Qd8, seeing Qh8+, with a perpetual to follow.

Now, after 44…Raxc2, (not Rcxc2, because the rook must provide protection to the e pawn), then 45 Qh8+ Kg5 46 Qd8+ etc., saves white from a loss.

when I realized this game cost junior first place I looked at the game move by move. my first impression was junior outplayed rybka most of this game. right up to 42)Qc7?? how does junior play such a bad move that losses on the spot? you are right ! 42) Qa4 and white is toast unless there is a perp + to save the game.

hmm! wonder how 42) Qc7? happened? even my free prog software knows Qc7 is a loser even at low ply!
