Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-17-16  zanzibar: This is given as the debut of the Caro-Kann, at least according to <CG>'s <Opening Explorer>.

However, also see:

Jul-10-16  jnpope: The match game between Williams and Withers, Bristol, 1844 published in The Chess Player's Chronicle, v5 1844, pp329-330 appears to be older than the NN vs NN game on Winter's page for the sequence 1.e4 c6. I'm not sure if it is technically a full-grown Caro-Kann after the subsequent moves (it may transpose into a Queen's Gambit of some flavor), but if we are just considering 1.e4 e6 I think this takes the crown (so far).
Jul-10-16  jnpope: My typo... should be "...but if we are just considering 1.e4 c6 I think this takes the crown (so far)."
