Domdaniel: 11.Ng3 is a terrible blunder from a player as strong as Chigorin, but even after 11.exd5 Qxd5 Black is better.

The sequence with Nd6+ is still sometimes seen in the English opening, with colours reversed. If White plays Nxc8 (in the Sicilian version) then his Knight has made five moves to exchange itself for an undeveloped Bishop.

The disruption to the Black King is minimal - f8 is safe - and Black's superior development leads to an advantage ... even if White doesn't also give him a free piece, as here.

Early Sicilian days.

Nov-30-14  Knight13: So White shouldn't have checked the Black King, then... Well, I could certainly imagine Schiffers himself playing 7. Nd6+ in this position if he had White.
