Check It Out: 22.Ne3 wins the exchange. Black probably could've fought on, but I hear long distance phone charges in 1962 were horrendous.
Aug-20-11  Tired Tim: Why a telephone game in 1962 ... when Sandiford had already moved from Manchester to the Dulwich area?

I played in a schools team in the "(Sunday) Times" National schools championship and played several match against teams in Scotland and N.Ireland by phone ... an interesting experience.

What do they do now ... use the internet in some way?

ray keene: 22Ne3 Rd4!! and Black is fine-a good example of premature resignation. And yes it was a telephone game-i imagine email is used now for long distance or a special cheap phone arrangement made-to be honest i have no idea!

Richard Taylor: I NZ we used to have telegraph matches (e.g. Auckland - Wellington). I think I lost every game I played in as I found it really hard to just play the board. The games used to take all day with "scrutineers" bringing the moves.

As my games more and more atrociously lost it seemed like a long drawn out nightmare...

The same seemed to apply to Interclub games which I mostly lose.

And nowadays I'm struggling to beat 8 year old players rating 1700 odd or even 1200 so I have stopped playing unless the tournament is nearby (one recently was just down the road, literally about 500 yards away)...

As to resignations I resigned once in a drawn position (not sure if ever in a won but I know those who have).

Once I reached about move 18 in a game and a kind of "voice" said, "You wll lose this eventually, no point in drawing this out." So I resigned. This was my first "A" Grade game in recent years: and I had somehow talked myself into believing that I was already beated. When I looked at the game later I couldn't see why I resigned: there didn't seem anything wrong!

Richard Taylor: Here he missed Rd4 and that the knight would be trapped. That's what is talked about in Yermolinksy's book ("Improve Chess..." or something). about the effect of "bad fortune" during a game. Sometimes though, you simply don't want to know.

Having missed the fork he was probably as disgusted with himself as anything else: I know the feeling!

Richard Taylor: It's actually as they say "very instructive" as it is situations that club players encounter quite a lot and it is that, the psychological factor that stops them improving.

White played well for a 14 year old here: swaps the knight then dominates with a N on d5.
