HeMateMe: A loose opening, black seems to give up too much. I like how whites king ends up being shielded by pieces, instead of pawns, out in the opening.

Maybe thats what Bacrot was playing for in the opening--expecting to get an attack for the pawn, because whites king was driven out into the open. No forcing lines for black, though.

Feb-10-10  Ezzy: A theoretical battle in what seems to be a recent fashionable line.

After 19 Qd4-f4

Grischuk v Aronian World team championships 2010 - Both players decided to repeat the position with 19...Qg6 20 Qg4 Qh6 21 Qf4 and a draw.

Kramnik v Hua London Chess Classic 2009 - Hua played 19...Qxe5 20 Qxe5 Nxe5 and in typical Kramnik style he outplayed Hua in the endgame and won.

Le Quang Liem v Bacrot Aeroflot 2010. This game delved into the complexities that can arise out of this position. 19...Qg6 20 Rd1 and a complex game starts to unfold. Bacrot eventually had a rush of blood to the head and went attacking the white king with his queen, and alas allowed whites passed pawn to cause havoc.

Black to move needs to play 32...Re8 33 d7 Rd8 stopping the white pawn, but ended up losing a piece by playing 32...Qf1+? 33 Kc2 Re8 34 d7 and black can't play 34..Re8 because his knight on e5 is en pris (Which was defended by the the queen until he played the reckless 32...Qf1+

So Bacrot lost a piece and tried to fight back by connecting his queen and rook and trying to deliver checks to whites exposed king. But all to no avail.

This Le Quang Liem is causing a bit of a chess stir at the moment. He seems to be winning everything. His rating is soaring fast, and if he continues on the upward curve, people will start to seriously look at this Vietnamese youngster. Well they're probably already taking serious note of him.

One to watch carefully in this tournament and the future.

It was only after his brief stint with GM Bareev that he started blasting GMs left and right. This scalp of the defending champion is a very, very good achievement. And he's only 19.

Yes, he's only going to get stronger. A future elite player maybe? He's certainly heading in the right direction.

Feb-11-10  arsen387: looking through the game just asked myself what will be if 25...Ng6 and found a beautiful mate with a Q sac. 25...Ng6 26.Qxf7 Kxf7 27.Rf5#. Not a forced sequence but still nice :)
Feb-11-10  asianwarrior: Le Quiang Liem is a promising Vietnamese player. He may soon be one of Asias super grandmaster.
Feb-11-10  Valmy: 34 ...Qf5+ may have saved BACROT after 35...Rxc8 36.d7xc8D+ Qxc8 and W is up an exhange but B may save the draw (from Rybka analyse of course ;-))
