Feb-12-11  ahubers: ummm....... why not 25. Rf8?

or 25. Rb8 Nxb8 26. Rf8#

Since any way you spin it, this is a win for white.

Phony Benoni: Looks like a mistake in the game score; Black's last move might have been 24...Nxe5. Every source I've found so far has given 24...Rxe5, but that simply can't be right.
Jul-11-12  e4 resigns: Rxe5!!
a3!!
Steinitz must have had too little sleep.

Honza Cervenka: 24...Rxe5 is without doubt a mistake in the game score as <Phony Benoni> suggested long time ago. But this game also quite clearly shows Steinitz's lifelong weak spot, which was the defense of black against Evans Gambit (clearly apparent in matches with Chigorin), which he voluntarily invited all the time playing always 3...Bc5 (he was really very stubborn man). In this game he fell in big troubles with so-called compromised defense with potential pins on e-file, and he could lose instantly after 15.fxe5! Of course, 15...dxe5?? 16.Bxe6 Qxe6 17.Rxe5 or 15...Bxc4 16.exd6 is out of consideration, but also 15...d5 16.Bb5+ looks quite hopeless, for example 16...Bd7 17.Bxd7+ Qxd7 18.e6 Qe7 19.Ba3 or 16...Kd8 17.Rf1 Nh6 (white threatened with 18.Bg5 Qxg5 19.Rf8+ Ke7 20.Qc5#) 18.Ba3 Qh4 19.g3 Qe4 20.Be7+! Kc8 21.Rac1 etc.

MissScarlett: Yes, <24...Nxe5> was played, as confirmed by the <Dundee Advertiser> of February 8th and the <Era> of April 28th. The mistake is surely Bachmann's.
