Nov-05-12  Castleinthesky: "Robert Fischer's" page aptly states "not to be confused with Robert James Fisher."
Nov-05-12  SuperPatzer77: Hey, chess folks!! Robert Fischer is NOT Robert James Fischer himself. It is just "another" Robert Fischer.

By the way, he is NOT family-related.

Nov-05-12  JG27Pyth: My least favorite Monday in several years of doing the POTD. But maybe I'm just in a bad mood from having a sore ankle, no gasoline to be had anywhere here in Brooklyn after last week's flood and a presidential election looming where I have absolutely no confidence in either candidate or either party represented.

And then this POTD. The Rff8 and Bc4 wins were obvious. So which was better? -- perhaps black had some tricky stalemate ploy that made one or the other incorrect. No. Hmmm... I suppose I should have seen that Rxg8+ was the quickest route to forcing mate but I failed to spot it. As far as I'm concerned Rff8 and Bc4 hardly compel resignation less than Rxg8+ -- but anyway to my way of thinking Black should have abandoned ship moves ago.

A classic Monday POTD queen sac would have been the line following black's alternate 33rd move: 33...Rxd8 34.Qf8+! Rxf8 35.Rxf8+ Bg8 36.Bc4 +

FSR: 35.Rxg8+ opens the Dore to the rest of White's pieces: 35...Kxg8 36.Bc4+ Qe6 37.Bxe6+ Kh8 38.Rf8#. Robert J. Fischer bites the dust.

<FSR> You got the wrong guy - it wasn't Robert J Fischer - it was ANOTHER Robert Fischer. However, Robert Fischer isn't related to the great American Robert James Fischer.

We thought it was him but it wasn't.

By the way, another Robert Fischer bites the dust.

FSR: <SuperPatzer77> Dude, I'm not an idiot. I knew full well that Black, while he was indeed Robert J. Fischer, was not <the> Robert J. Fischer, who played no serious games after 1992 (and no serious games against a human not named Boris Spassky after 1972).

  FSR: From ChessBase:

<One interesting call came when someone did a database search for Fischer's games and found several after 1992. "I know your data is inaccurate because Robert J. Fischer did not play any chess after 1992!" Actually, he did. Robert J. Fischer played (and still plays) many games, mostly in the Virginia area. I've spoken with him on a couple of occasions and he's a heck of a nice guy. He's also not the Robert J. Fischer who won the world chess championship in 1972. He's a USCF master who just happens to have the same name. (None of this really has a thing to do with searches; I just think it's a hilarious story. It's a real hoot to see young kids looking at a wallchart at a VCF tournament and freaking out over the participation of Robert J. Fischer. Bob doesn't even argue anymore -- he just signs the requested autograph and goes back to his game).> http://www.chessbase.com/support/su...

Nov-05-12  kevin86: In this puzzle, the queen is sacked before the puzzle actually begins.

White sacs rook at g8,bishop checks, second rook mates.

Nov-05-12  dufferps: I wanted to play 35. Rff8. Not as sharp as 35. Rxg8+, but I think it wins anyway: 35. Rff8 Qe6,
36. Rxe6 h6,
37. Bd3 g5, (does black have a better move?)
38. Re7 any move
39. Rh7#

A variation:
37. ... b5
38. Ree8 g6
39. Rxg8+ Kh7
40. Bxg6#

FSR: <dufferps> Yes, 35.Rff8 or 35.Bc4 is very nearly as good, forcing Black to sac his queen and play on down two rooks, bishop and knight if he insists on continuing the game.

keypusher: I have a strong bias towards checks, since they cut down on the amount of calculation necessary. Not sure that it helps me OTB, but it does help solve puzzles.
Nov-05-12  agb2002: White has two rooks and a knight.

White can win immediately with 35.Rxg8+ Kxg8 36.Bc4+ and mate in two. The alternatives 35.Bc4 and 35.Rff8 are a bit slower.

Nov-05-12  M.Hassan: <newzild:M. Hassan I spotted your first line as well, but it's not mate because Black plays 36. h5 instead of 36. h6, giving the king an extra flight square.>

Right you are. I missed it.
Thank you cordially

Nov-06-12  SachDiscovered: Lets add some spice to this MONDAY puzzle..
What if white doesn't have f2 Rook?.
Can he still force the mate?
I found rather simple answer! Offcourse he can!!

The key move is Bc4, threatening Rxg8 mate..
Blacks pinned bishop and misplaced queen are useless.. Only way to prolong defeat is to sacrifice queen by Qe6. Now white happily take it!! Which will allow black king escape route via h7.. White with this material superiority can easily win...

AylerKupp: I actually feel a little sorry for the guy. Imagine having to live up to the expectations of having a name like that! (and I don't mean Dore Sheppard). It would be like a physics graduate student named Albert Einstein or a college basketball player named Michael Jordan.
Nov-06-12  Nullifidian: Not getting off to a good start if I intend to do these every day, like I tell myself I will every week.

Nov-06-12  SuperPatzer77: <FSR> Why did you write "Robert J Fischer bites the dust"?? You've pulled the wool over my eyes. I suggest you remove "J" from his full name The truth is that he is ANOTHER Robert Fischer.

<FSR> I actually didn't say "you're an idiot". I just don't want anyone confused about this guy himself - that's all. I mean you are confused - NOT an idiot.

SuperPatzer77

Nov-06-12  Shams: The Black player once had a long letter published in Chess Life. He signed it, "Robert J. Fischer". Then he added, "P.S. I am the Life Master from Virginia, not the fellow who beat Spassky."

<You're> confused, not me. I've played in tournaments with this guy, and know that his name is Robert J. Fischer. I also know that the guy who played Black here must be that Robert J. Fischer, not <the> Robert J. Fischer. If Bobby Fischer had played in the 1995 World Open, I (and millions of other people) would have noticed, believe me.

I wasn't trying to pull the wool over anyone's eyes. It's common knowledge that Bobby Fischer's last two events were his 1972 and 1992 matches against Spassky - so this guy couldn't be him. That said, I can see why, since you'd never heard of the other RJF, you'd be confused. The first time I saw his name on a tournament wall-chart I certainly did a double take.

Nov-06-12  SuperPatzer77: <FSR> Look, we all are confused (period). Now please stop bragging about yourself. I just said "You and I are confused" (period) - that's all.

This chessgames page has tricked us into believing that he was the real Bobby Fischer. That's why WE ALL are confused (period).

Just please stop being egotistic.

I actually didn't say "You're an idiot". Just be honest with the others! Look, I'm confused about him - that's all.

By the way, I don't like dishonesty (period). Right now we better shut up and move on - that's it for now.
