Kibitzer's Corner
Jul-26-10  zanshin: Although this was a short draw, I think the game is quite complex. Wesley played well to salvage a draw after a weak opening (<16.Qc2?> loses a pawn). During live coverage of this game, there were several questions: e.g., why did Rybka 4 suggest 19...Nc5, was 20...Be5 really a good move, why was the Rook on f8 immune from capture?
Jul-26-10  zanshin: I think <19...Nf6> was where Nguyen started to lose his advantage.

Move 19 for Black:

[-1.26] d=16 19...Nc5 20.Na2 Qb3 21.Qc4 Qxc4 22.Bxc4 cxd5 23.Bxd5 Be5 24.Nc3 Bf5 25.Bh6 Rfe8 26.Bc4 Be6 27.Bb5 Red8 28.Be3 b6 29.Kg1 Bb3 30.Re1 (0:00:33) 4652kN

[-0.60] d=15 19...Nf6 20.dxc6 bxc6 21.Bf3 Rd8 22.Bxc6 Bf5 23.Qe2 Rab8 24.Bg5 Kg7 25.Bxf6 Bxf6 26.Bb5 Rbc8 27.Rac1 Rxd1 28.Rxd1 Bxc3 29.bxc3 Rxc3 30.Qe5 f6 (0:00:20) 2793kN

As far as I can tell, 19...Nc5 threatens ...Bf5 with a strong position, taking away Bd3 as a defense.

Jul-26-10  zanshin: I give up. Even with Rybka 4, I don't understand the moves. What's the point behind <20...Be5> when it is simpler to move the rook away from f8?

Move 20 for black:

Jul-26-10  Sularus: <What's the point behind <20...Be5>>

Since black's LSB is already aimed at white's king, Nguyen probably wanted to aim his other bishop there as well and provide a means for his queen to get to the other side of the board too. Be5 clears a path for his queen.

Just my two cents though.

I am a patzer btw, pare hehe.

Jul-26-10  Spell Binder: <zanshin> Howdy?

20...Be5 looks interesting. Black intends to follow with 21...Qf4 should White takes the rook.

Jul-26-10  zanshin: <Sularus> <Spell Binder> Thanks for your comments!

<Black intends to follow with 21...Qf4 should White takes the rook>

<Rich> I remember this line came up during the live analysis. I forgot about it because Wes refused to take the Rook.
