Dec-21-10  messachess: K. makes it look easy. At the end he just had to calculate to get to the Q-side pawns one square ahead of black. Did it!
Dec-22-10  paavoh: Shades of Smyslov and Karpov in the superb way Karjakin conducted his play.
Dec-22-10  paavoh: Seems that <tamar> saw Karjakin as a "Smyslovian" before I did: "Karjakin is looking like the new Smyslov." I Kurnosov vs Karjakin, 2010 (Dec 19)

Troller: I was looking at 37.Qa8 during the game to enter similar lines with an extra pawn, but then Black might complicate, e.g. 37..Bd5 etc. Karjakin took a little extra time here (he had 20 mins left against Tomashevsky's 30 seconds) and calculated that he could put his king on g2 before exchanging on f8 to reach the easily won endgame.

I suppose 38..Kg7 can be met with 39.Bh6+, at the very least White can go into a queen endgame with a distant passed b-pawn here.
