THE MAJOR TOURNEY.>

The proceedings on the fifth day of the Major Tourney resembled those on the fourth, in that the games played at the several boards occupied comparatively short periods of time, and extended only to moderate numbers of moves.

At Board III, Mr. Crane played a Centre Gambit against Mr. Stanley, to which the Warrnambool champion replied with the defence which was adopted by Mr. Charlick in the same opening against Mr. Esling [F K Esling vs H Charlick, 1887 at the Adelaide Congress of last year.

Mr. Crane castled on the queen's side, and Mr. Stanley castled on the opposite wing. This preparatory business is frequently a prelude to a very lively encounter. Unfortunately, however, Mr. Stanley not only lost time in the middle game through attempting a counter attack, but also allowed Mr. Crane to push on his king's rooks pawn without opposition. The result was that his game became broken, and that his defeat was inevitable.>

Time - Mr Crane, 2 hours 26 minutes ; Mr Stanley, 2 hours 29 minutes.>
