Jul-20-11  Ulhumbrus: If the ending without Queens is lost for Black, this suggests that 56 Qe8+ wins immediately
Jul-20-11  Shams: I think Black has some drawing chances if the queens come off. White' kingside pawns are weak.
Jul-20-11  Gordon1306: Now h5 looks strong (threatens h6 .. )
Jul-20-11  Ulhumbrus: Black's g7 pawn is pinned to h7 against the potential threat of Qh7 mate. This suggests 56 h5 and 57 h6.
Jul-20-11  Ulhumbrus: <Gordon1306> As happens often, I saw your message after having sent mine
Jul-20-11  Marmot PFL: Not sure that trading queens wins, as white has some weak isolated pawns. h5-h6 with mate threats looks more decisive.
Jul-20-11  MrSpock: 56. h5!
Jul-20-11  Strongest Force: Fab Car need to put a uptown NYC whipping on this man
Jul-20-11  Marmot PFL: Bf7 Qg1+ Ka2 and black can resign

  tamar: Carmageddon
Jul-20-11  Shams: Very nice.
Jul-20-11  Ulhumbrus: Shirov compels brilliantly Black's Queen to choose a way to abandon her defence of the King
Jul-20-11  Marmot PFL: almost like a wednesday puzzle
Jul-20-11  MrSpock: Congratulation Alexey :-)
Jul-20-11  Gordon1306: One last check from Black.
Jul-20-11  Ulhumbrus: 62...Kh7 63 Bg6+! Nxg6 64 Qf7+! Kh8 66 fxg6 and it's all over
Jul-20-11  lost in space: Boing!!!!
Jul-20-11  Marmot PFL: White got no advantage with the Bishop's opening but just kept grinding away.

HeMateMe: Berlin defence ist kaput! Reichstag occupied!
Jul-21-11  howlwolf: I don't know exactly when you'll are talking about exchanging queens for black but I like his chances to at least hold the draw after 33...Qxe7 34 Rxe7 Nb6 35 Kf2 Rd8. I would like to see what the silicon monsters have to say about that, and of course, you humans as well.
Jul-21-11  lifeisazugzwang: I usually do not write comments but this game is absolutely beautiful. A classical reckless and ruthless Shirov game. An imbalanced opening, totally agressive game play and stunning final combo. actually Shirov has already won with 49.Ka2 10 moves before Caruana resigned... White's position was obviously better and only chance that black had using queen around g2 and e3 but Shirov didnt bother to make a defense as usual and totally pwned caruana. Again a great finishing move.
Destination: Berlin would be a nice pun.

Honza Cervenka: If I would be asked who played with white pieces here, my first guess would be Smyslov. Very nice game by Shirov.
Jul-23-11  shuriken68: Is it just me or it's trendy these days to play old openings in order to surprise new opponents? I mean Bishop's opening, used by GM Shirov here, Scotch game used by Kasparov's young padawan :) Carlsen yesterday in Biel... Seems like some research has been done and old ways been revisited with some computer help, eh?
