Phony Benoni: This game was awarded the tournament's Best Game Prize, which much have been decided by judges with a taste for the nasty. After <41.h4>:

The rest is just rubbing salt in the wounds. A glance at the rooks tells the story. I do like how the fellow on g2 gets out of the way so his colleague on h2 can have the glory.

An Englishman: Good Evening: Surprisingly, 42.Rd2 has its uses. If 42.Ra2 immediately, 42...Nxd5 might annoy White for a few moves. But after 42.Rd2,Nxd5; 43.cxd5,Qxd5; 44.Bf6+ will inflict some damage.
Jun-05-21  Amarande: Let's see if I've got the ending right?

44 ... Qf8 (nothing really matters but that either now or on the next move Ne7 has to be played) 45 Ra8 Ne7 46 Ba6 Kd7 47 Bxb6 cxb6 48 Bxc8+ Nxc8 49 Qb7+ and 50 Rxc8#

Phony Benoni: <Amarande> Oh, it's even worse than that. If 44...Qf8, White executes his real threat: 45.Qxc8+ Kxc8 46.Ra8+ Kb7 47.Bc6#.

Black just about has to play 44...Ne7, and White responds 45.Bxb6! Now if 45...cxb6 46.Qxb6# (yes, mate!). So Black needs to uncover the rooks with 45...Ng6, and White plays 46.Ra8, and I am not one of those writers who plumbs human misery to its depths.

FSR: David S Polland turns 113 later this month! (Let's hope 113 isn't bad luck for him.)

OhioChessFan: Well, I've been hoping all day someone would else would ask about the pun. Why "NaCl" and not "Salt"?

beatgiant: <OhioChessFan> Wasn't it to make a "knuckle sandwitch" pun? (NaCl -> knuckle)
