keypusher: The position after 26....Bxd4 made Jacob Aagard's fine book _Calculation_.

The ending looks hopeless for White, but he can draw by "falling" into a simplifying combination: 27.Rd1! Be4+! 28.Kxe4 Nc3+ 29.Kxd4 Nxd1

Now 30.h3!! and the knight will never get out of its cage. White will just chase it around.

Pretty exciting middlegame, too. Black played a promising queen sacrifice, and seemed about to cash in after 20.Bb5:

20....Neg4+ 21.fxg4 Ne4+ 22.Kf3 Nxc3 23.Qd2 Rxe3+! 24.Kxe3 Rxd4 25.Nd5+ 26.Kf3 Bxd4, getting us to the first diagram.

It's all so sharp and pretty, you almost wonder if they'd worked it out beforehand....

fredthebear: Yes, a sharp middlegame that suddenly simplifies into a perpetual threat. Black's double rook sacrifice 23...RxBe3+! and 24...RxNd4 followed by a double bishop sacrifice 27...Be4+! etc. to enter the endgame is VERY unusual.

Thanks for the treat <keypusher>!!

keypusher: <FTB> It's amazing, isn't it? And I spelled Aagaard's name wrong -- sorry Jacob!
