Oct-31-11  Sularus: poor black knight. it was like a ferrari in a box.
Oct-31-11  sicilianhugefun: Sularus: poor black knight. it was like a ferrari in a box. It became strongly centralized in the end.

sbevan: B calmly puts the N on h5 on move 9, which W can't get at - despite all the back rank threats. Then B leaves the N there for 24, for two dozen moves!

Wonderful game.

Nov-01-11  anandrulez: Some reports ( I think TWIC or chessbase) says that qc5 was a blunder from Vishy - as in lost his edge - if so what is the alternative and evals .

After <26.gxf6> white threatens <Rd8!> (fancy queen sac) , for example after careless <26...cxb2??> <27.Rd8! Qc5> <28.Qc4!> nasty Qsac again , Anand prolly saw these lines and decided to play <26...Qc5> in advance, eliminating the tempo on his queen at least.

Alternatives? <26...Ra8> or maybe simple <26...c2> . After checking it , <26...c2 27.Rc1 Rc7 28. Rc2! Qxc2 29. Nh6 Kh8 30.Nxf7!> perpetual , so i would go with <Ra8>.

PS dont take these lines too seriously , no software was involved in their `verification ` , they should only illustrate a part of what went through Vishy`s head in the seconds he spent on <Qc5> =)

Nov-01-11  anandrulez: Hi bronkenstein , the perpetual is interesting . Ra8 looked fine , but engines I guess say h6 would have consolidated his advantage by removing the rd8 line completely ! Now Anand gives the initiative to Mamedyarov and loses his bind on the rook .
Nov-01-11  bronkenstein: Ah , <h6> , typical silent computer move. If white goes <bxc bxc Nxh6+> , the c-passer becomes very dangerous I guess.
Nov-01-11  Ulhumbrus: After 6...Nbd7 White can hardly claim an advantage, certainly none great enough to justify an attack like 7 g4?

The attack is unsound, then, and can be forecast to lose.

However in a blitz game anything can happen, and Mamedyarov has to try to win this game in order to avoid losing the match.

One alternative to 7...dxc4 is 7...Ne4.

Nov-01-11  freeman8201: I think Anand played the classical QGD to avoid Mamedyarov's usual Shirov-Shabalov attack on the Semi-Slav.
