This would appear to be a casual game, as opposed to an official tournament or match.

fredthebear: <jfq> Agreed. My lack of tournament evidence does not amount to fact, however.

All three Kubbel brothers met horrid ends. "Both Leonid and Evgeny Kubbel died of starvation in 1942 during the Nazi siege of Leningrad, while Arvid was executed by the NKVD in 1938." -- Wikipedia.

fredthebear: Black's 5...Qe7 is the only such example in the database thus far. Opening Explorer says 5...d5 is a better try +0.61 (23 ply).

Black's 3...d6 is not recommended either:

Nov-03-21  Cibator: The obvious pun would be in pretty poor taste, I think, given <fredthebear>'s first comment.

<fredthebear> Thanks for your opinion on this.

I was researching/writing the bio for Evgeny Kubbel yesterday and I could only find two tournament appearances from him.

He was mainly occupied with chess problem composition.

<ftb> Yes 5...Qe7 tangles black up and significantly retards development:

<Cibator> I can't think of what the obvious pun would be? Might you tell me brah.

Nov-03-21  SChesshevsky: <jessicafischerqueen:... I can't think of what the obvious pun would be?...>

Mere puns? Not for us highbrows. Pour moi, only great literature can explain this game.

Maybe something like... "Double Kubbel, toil and trouble. One's King burns and the other's Queen bubbles."

<SChesshevsky> That is outstanding.

I remember hearing something along those lines in the old Walt Disney movie <The Sword and the Stone>!

Nov-03-21  SChesshevsky: <...I remember hearing something along those lines in the old Walt Disney movie...>

Between Disney and Looney Tunes, seems most of high culture has been captured:

"... I must kill the Wabbit!..."

Nov-03-21  Cibator: <SChesshevsky> correctly cites the "Scottish play" as source for the pun.

When my class was studying it, this

was in the charts. We were strongly tempted to break into a chorus of the song at the appropriate point in the play, but the humourless old coot who was teaching us would most definitely not have appreciated the joke.
