EVGENY KUBBEL
(born Oct-23-1894, died 1942, 47 years old) Russia

[what is this?]

Evgeny Ivanovich Kubbel (b.1894) was an engineer by trade, and the youngest of three chess playing Kubbel brothers, including Arvid Kubbel (b. 1889) and Leonid Kubbel (b. 1891). Evgeny became best known as a chess problemist. He was noted for composing 'fairy problems,' "...which contain one or more unorthodox features, usually a piece or condition, less frequently an unorthodox board."1 In addition to composing problems, Evgeny also played in a few chess events. In a Moscow 1927 tournament Evgeny finished equal 8th-10th, behind Peter Romanovsky, A. Zhilin, and Arvid Kubbel. 2 In the 1926 Moscow v Leningrad Trade Unions match, both Evgeny and Arvid Kubbel played for the Leningrad team. On 16th board Evgeny scored +1-0=1 against Gertzman, while Arvid scored +1-0=1 against Abram Borisovich Poliak on 3rd board. Leningrad won the match 23.5 to 18.5.3 Evgeny Kubbel died in 1942 during the siege of Leningrad.
