Domdaniel: This seems to be the only Black win in the CG database in the last ten years in the 9.Nf4 line. A sharp variation where White wins the Exchange and dislodges the Black King -- though Black gets a strong pawn centre and some compensation. Not enough, going by those recent results - there have been about 10 White wins over the same period.

The 9.Nf4 line was a main reason that I stopped playing 3...Nf6 in the Tarrasch French.

perfidious: <Dom> Most interesting--this is a line I played once as White (the only time I ever tried 5.Bd3) and at least twice as Black OTB, winning all the games. Have to review all these White wins--always felt his position after grabbing the exchange was a bit dodgy.

Domdaniel: <perf> I think it was Timman who won the original stem game for Black in this line. Maybe I'm just not good enough to make something of the Black position, but I felt that White was better.

perfidious: <Dom> My opponent when I played White, while a quite capable player, moved his queen from the protection of f8 and allowed Bxg6+, so I won easily, but my impression was such that, when we met again a few months on, I took up 5.f4 and played it thereafter--eventually with both colours. Even beat the young Patrick Wolff in 5.f4 c5 6.c3 Nc6 7.Ndf3 Qb6 8.g3 f5.
