GrahamClayton: Umm, I don't think that there would have been much chess played in Tibet in 1938, as well as arranging for any games to be published in major chess magazines. Maybe a fake?

sachistu: <GrahamClayton> This (and a 2nd game, allegedly won by Hicks as White) has been thoroughly debunked in the Australian Chess review,June,1937, p168. Their amusing article describes how the 'Bulletin Ouvrier de Echecs' (Workers Chess Bulletin) call this a "great chess match" whose "preparations were kept secret in view of the international tension". I will not repeat the entire story, except to say Ze-dhe was supposedly the Mongolian champion (and descendent of Genghis Khan!)and Hicks was a well-known New Zealand master. The contest was to be 1001 games (yes, that's evidently not a misprint!) in accordance with custom, and the referee was the Dalai-Lama (!) ACR points out Hicks (from Wellington) has never been to Tibet. They also refused to print any of the 'games'. However, in the ACR,Sept,1939,p242, the editors point out the 'Bulletin Ouvrier de Echecs' was still persisting in the 'libel' (as ACR puts it). In this case, they decided to publish one of the 'games' (with Hicks as White) with the notes allegedly by Hicks. I have both 'games' in my database, just to have a good laugh. Yes, this and the other 'game' is a 'fake'.
