Kibitzer's Corner
Feb-20-12  Whitehat1963: What's the finish?
Feb-20-12  Gilmoy: White will <check out> of the mutual threat:

- 21..Be6 22.Qg4

- 21..Kf8 22.Qh6+ Qg7 23.Re8+

- 21..Kd8 22.Nxf7+

- 21..Kd7 22.Nxf7 gxh5 23.Nxh8 and Black can't trap it

The flashy sideline 21..Kd7 22.Qg4+!? also wins, but Black will go down "only" a piece to avoid mate: 22..Kc6[] <Kc7 23.Qg3+, anything else gets forked> 23.Qg3 <triple-forking c3, Rb8, Qf7> Qc7 <Qb7 deprives flight square, gets mated> 24.Qxc3+ Kb7 25.Bxb4 <now axb4 26.Ra7+ and Black is mated by some combination of Ra1 and Qc5> Qxc3 26.Bxc3 and the a-pawn drops. So maybe 24..Kd7 25.Bxb4 axb4 26.Qf3 and Black looks like a turtle on a freeway.

Feb-20-12  Whitehat1963: Thanks, Gilmoy. Very clear.
Feb-20-12  Everett: <...and Black looks like a turtle on a freeway.> thank you very much <Gilmoy> for the late night chuckle. The image struck me funny...

al wazir: Very embarrassing way for a GM to lose. Maybe 17...Bb7 would have avoided the disaster.
Feb-21-12  rilkefan: At least it was a rapid.
Feb-21-12  haydn20: <al wazir> As far as I can tell, the simple 15...Nxd4 is =, as is either 16...Bb7 or even 17...Bb7.
Apr-12-12  TheRavenPK: <haydn20> As far as I can tell, Jakovenko thought the same until he got toasted too two months later. Morozevich vs D Jakovenko, 2012
