Kibitzer's Corner
Feb-01-18  optimal play: 17.d5!

18.Bxg7? Baynes tries to be too clever. He should have played Bg4 straight away.

53.f4?? There's no win here. 53.Kc2 forces a draw with three-fold repetition, since Crakanthorp can't play b4 because Kb1 would then win for white. However Baynes can't believe he must settle for a draw with those passed pawns and he can't resist pushing one. That allows Crakanthorp the opportunity to play b4+ and steal the win.

This game is from the 4th round of the New South Wales state championship played in Sydney on 15th August 1905.

The final standings were:-

Spencer Crakanthorp 9/10
William Henry Jonas 7/10
Thomas Mason Bradshaw 5/10
George W Baynes 4/10
Henry Taylour 3½/10
J Spedding 1½/10

Feb-01-18  Granny O Doul: I'll bet George felt he had heard the last about this game.
