GrahamClayton: Baynes played in the inaugral New South Wales versus Victoria telegraph match for Victoria in 1870, and was still competing in 1912, except this time he was playing for New South Wales.

<<<<CHESS BY TELEGRAPH.>

NEW SOUTH WALES V VICTORIA.>

There was a large attendance of chess lovers at the Sydney School of Arts yesterday, when a ten-aside match by telegraph was played between New South Wales and Victoria.

These contests began in 1870.

Of the players who took part in that year's match, Mr. G. W. Baynes (formerly of Melbourne, but now of Sydney) is the only one now playing interstate chess.>
