Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-29-15  optimal play: <<<<<THE MATCH BETWEEN SOUTH AUSTRALIA AND NEW SOUTH WALES.>

The [above] game was played at Board No. 2 :>

NOTES.>

3...g6

This move, which, we believe, is the invention of Herr Paulsen, should have been preceded by Kt to K 2; this defence is much favoured in England at the present time.

7.O-O

P to K B 4 before castling would have been stronger play.

7...Qe7

This tends very much to cramp Black's game. Kt to K 2, followed by Castles, was the proper play.

9.Nc3

This is bad on principle, as Black, by taking off the Kt, isolates and weakens the enemy's Pawns.

9...c6

We should have preferred the line of play indicated in the previous note.

13.f4

White has now a fine free game.

18.Ref1

He should have played P takes P. It is now evident that White's 16th move was lost time.

18...Bxc3

This move and the following one were correctly played.

23...Qg4

Q to K 7 would have been stronger, suppose: 23... Q to K 7 ; 24. Q to K R 6 ; K R to Kt sq ; 25. Q to K R 3 ; Q R to K 5

(23...Qe2 24.Qh6 Rg8 25.Qh3 Re4)

threatening to play Q R to K Kt 5 with killing effect.

27...Qxa2

Winning with Black is now merely a matter of time; the weakness of White's isolated Pawns is now apparent.

32.Qd4

Playing his opponent's game; R takes Q Kt P would have been more to the purpose.

This is a well contested game, and does credit to both combatants.>
