perfidious: <Robed.Bishop> White is quite lost here: after 31.Rxe8 Bxe8 the proud knight at d6 has no safe haven.
Sep-11-12  Robed.Bishop: <perfidious> Just as I was going to bed my mind wandered back to this position and it occurred to me that the LSB might be able to capture after 31.Rxe8. I came here to look, and lo and behold it's true. I just couldn't get here fast enough...
Sep-11-12  Xeroxx: White was the underdog.

fredthebear: In the final position, the Re7 is en prise as the Black bishop skewers rook to Nd6. If either White rook moves, the White knight hangs. If the pinned knight moves, the Rd1 is lost with check. It's a problem that cannot be fixed with check, capture, or moving one to defend the other.

Perhaps best for White is 31.RxRe8 BxRe8 32.NxBe8 RxRd1+ 33.Kg2 when White is left with the Knight pair against Black's rook and bishop. Black should win the ending with two long range pieces capitalizing on pawns on both sides of the board. It's reasonable for White to resign at upper levels of chess.
