An Englishman: Good Evening: The database has four games featuring the 6.e4 countergambit in which White sacrifices a Knight for a strong pawn center. White won all four. But look closely at the four games. In the 2nd and 4th games, the winner with the White pieces had been the loser with the Black pieces in games 1 and 3. I wonder if these were part of one or more thematic correspondence tournaments, where all of the players had to play two games with this variation.

perfidious: <An Englishman> In other obscure lines, this is a phenomenon I have observed, which can very easily skew the statistics for devotees of the 'so-and-so scored x per cent' school, who do not critically scrutinise the games in question.

An Englishman: Good Evening: Very true, <perfidious>. Sometimes, a variation will have a huge plus score until the very last game, when someone finally finds the refutation that everyone else had missed. Nonetheless, I take a little comfort in knowing that even today, "there be monsters" on the chessboard, where players have to leave the safe harbor of theory before the 10th move.
