What a horrible position for Le Quang Liem (White), in the most important game of the tournament.

LQL lost both of his last two White games, round 8 to Short and round 10 to Sandipan. Yikes!

Feb-01-13  iking: a terrible penetration of the 7th rank by black
Feb-01-13  TugasKamagong: Sandipan's 3rd win against Le (going by the cg.com database), making the personal score between them 3-0 with 3 draws. In this game Chanda gives up his Q for N and R, but his 2 rooks on the 7th, and the B in the background, turn into monsters. Interesting that in his 2nd win over Quang Liem, Chanda also gave up his Q to turn his 2R into monsters: C Sandipan vs Le Quang Liem, 2012.

Next time Le plays him, he'll probably look to get both of Sandipan's rooks off the board before they turn into incredible hulks.

Feb-04-13  Pulo y Gata: <TugasKamagong> If that's really the score between these two players, then I think it's safe to assume that LQL has some psychological difficulties when facing Sandipan. It happens. The first time you lose against someone, you want to get your revenge immediately. The second time you lose against the same opponent, you start to have doubts in your own abilities. The third time? Well, as one GM said, a feather will do after that.

For example, I have played thrice against one strong junior in three different tournaments. The first time, I mated him with a Knight; the second time, a Bishop; the third time; a Rook. As I also play blitz with him sometimes, I tease him that I will mate him with my Queen the next time, then with a pawn, until I've completed the set. It's a joke, but I know I have his number. For now.

It's something LQL will have to solve.

Feb-04-13  fokers13: Not a very tasteful joke to be sure but yes chess demons, most of us have them, even if objectively the can be equal/worse than us.

Luckily i haven't come across mine in a long while.

Feb-04-13  Pulo y Gata: <fokers13> There are worse jokes where I play, I tell you. In fact, I think it won't be long before the young man starts beating me. The joke is also a challenge for him to work harder.

LQL has a plus score against Wesley So, for example. Wesley has never won against Le, if I'm not mistaken.
