Jul-12-13  agb2002: Black is one pawn ahead.

White threatens 27.Nxg6 hxg6 (27... Qc1+ 28.Bd1 hxg6 29.Qxh7#) 28.Qh8+ Kf7 29.Rh7+ Ke8 30.Qxf8+ Kxf8 31.Rxc7 + -.

The white queen prevents ... Qxe5 and ... Qc3+. This suggests 26... Bxg2 27.Qxg2 (what else?) 27... Qc1+ 28.Bd1 Qc3+ 29.Ke2 (29.Kf1 Ne3+ and 30... Nxg2 - +) 29... Qxe5+

A) 30.Kf1 Ne3+, etc.

B) 30.Kf3 Nh4+, also wins the queen.

C) 30.Kd2 Rd8+ 31.Kc2 (31.Kc1 Qa1+ 32.Kc2 Ne3+ 33.fxe3 Qxa2+ and 34... Qxg2 - +) 31... Nd4+

C.1) 32.Kd2 Nb3+ 33.Kc2 Rd2+ 34.Kb1 Qb2#.

C.2) 32.Kd3 Nb3+ 32.Kc2 (32.Kc4 Nd2#) 32... Rd2+ as in C.1.

C.3) 32.Kc1 Ne2+ 33.Bxe2 (33.Kc3 Qc3+ 34.Kb1 Qc1#; 33.Kb1 a3 - +) 33... Qc3+ 34.Kb1 a3 - +.

C.4) 32.Kb1 Nb5 with two extra pawns and many threats (... a3, ... Na(c)3+, ... Rd2, etc.).

D) 30.Kd3 Rd8+ 31.Kc4 (31.Kc2 transposes to C) 31... Qd4+ 32.Kb5 Rb8+ and mate soon.

Jul-12-13  moppa: Ouch! I had 26. .Bxg2 27.Qxg2 Ne3 28. fxe3 Qc3+ 29. Kd1 Rd8+ 30. Bd3 Rxd3+ anf mates... except that the knight covers d3 :(
Jul-12-13  mistreaver: Friday. Black to play. Difficult. 26.?
White is already in difficulties. OTB i would have probably played 26... Bxg2
27 Qxg2 Qxe5
28 Qh3 Qc7
But since this is a puzzle we have to find something little more imaginative. If black could somehow divert the e2 bishop from d1-h5 diagonal he would have mate in one. Or maybe this 26... Bxg2 idea is not so stupid, but with different idea in mind: 26... Bxg2
27 Qxg2 Qc3+ (The whole point is to have this check at disposal) 28 Kd1 (on f1 it is mate in 2)
28... Qa1+
29 Kd2 Rd8+
30 Kc2 Nf4+ and black is just winning.
Time to check.
-------------
My line is just as winning. The point is that
29 Kd2 Rd8+ can be met by
30 Nd3 and the winning path is not so clear.
The right solution would appear to be:
28 Qa1+ Kd2
29 Qxa2+ Kd1 (white can't go to c line since Rc8 would come) 30 Qb1+ Kd2
31 Qb2+ Kd1
32 Rc8
Jul-12-13  morfishine: Nice continuation though 26...Bxg2 27.Qxg2 Qxe5 looks conclusive enough

paulalbert: Finding Bxg2, forcing Qxg2, was not too hard to find, but I went with Qc3ch after that, deciding erroneously that it was better than Qc1ch, missing the ideas of the Qc1ch followed by Qc3ch sequence, particularly that the Ne3ch fork works if the K goes to f1 because white's f pawn is pinned by the black R still on f8. I was too intent on getting the black R to d8.
Jul-12-13  TheaN: Friday 12 July 2013

<26....?>

The idea was right, but I sadly took the sac a move further than necessary. OTB, shortening it was the likely result after playing Bxg2. Lets review, the knightmare on e3street:

<26....Bxg2> black is threatening Qxe5 at the defense of counterattack Qxh7#. This would prove Bxg2 to be very effective. White has no real option.

<27.Qxg2> now, rather than continuing with the easy Qc1>3>e5+, I decided knights are obsolete.

<27....Ne3?! 28.fxe3> again no real option for white. Or mate on d1, or the queen's gone.

<28....Qc1+ 29.Bd1 Qc3+ 30.Ke2 Qxe5 > and white's simply winning due to the extra bishop... striking, cause the material is essentially the same as with the same move sequence without Ne3, so much for incorrectly measuring material.

Jul-12-13  geniokov: 26..Bxg2! 27.Qxg2 Qc3+! 28.Kd1 now 28..Rd8+! White is already lost!
Jul-12-13  morfishine: <Bartimaeus> Nice continuation of the 26..Bxg2 27. Qxg2 <27...Qxe5> line
Jul-12-13  cyclon: My solution in today's Puzzle is 26. -Bxg2 ( to get White Queen OFF from the 3rd rank ) 27. Qxg2 ( any other suggestions? - I'm all 'eyes' ) 27. -Qc1+ 28. Bd1 Qc3+ ( only now ) 29. Ke2 ( 29. Kf1 Ne3+ ) - 29. -Qb2+ ( this is the key-move of the combination ) 30. Kd3 and now the King is cut-off from the 2nd rank ( 30. Kf1 Ne3+ / 30. Kf3 Nh4++ / 30. Bc2 Qxc2+ 31. Ke1 Nd4 mates ) and there follows; -30. -Rd8+ 31. Kc4 ( 31. Ke4 Qd4+ 32. Kf3 Qd5+ wins the Queen and 31. Nd7 Rxd7+ is no improvement ) -31. -Rd4+ 32. Kc5 ( or 32. Kb5 ) -32. - Qxb4+ 33. Kc6 Ne7+ 34. Kc7 Qb6X.

  Willber G: <geniokov: 26..Bxg2! 27.Qxg2 Qc3+! 28.Kd1 now 28..Rd8+! White is already lost!>

This is the line took.

Jul-12-13  kevin86: White sets a trap...but the trapper is trapped.

This one was far beyond my pay grade.

Jul-12-13  newzild: Several people have suggested this line:

26...Bxg2
27. Qxg2 Qc1+
28. Bd1 Ne3
28. fxe3 Qxe3+

But I can't see anything convincing for Black after 29. Qe2 Qc3+ 30. Qd2 Qxe5+ 31. Qd2.

Some other people have suggested:

26...Bxg2
27. Qxg2 Qc1+
28. Bd1 Rd8

But again, 29. White's 29. Qf3 looks suffient to me.

What am I missing?

LIFE Master AJ: my try would be:

26...BxP/g2; ('!!') 27.QxB/g2, (What else?) 27...Qc1+; 28.Bd1, Ne3. ('!')

IF I am right, it's a crusher ... but the variations are pretty complex, and I am not at all sure that I have calculated the variations correctly. (I only spent about 10-20 minutes on it, but I took a phone call during that time, too.)

Your notation is one line off as you numbered line 28 twice. Anyway, try 31...Qg3+ instead of 31...Qxe5+.

It's a nice forced mate with rook and queen.

Jul-12-13  zb2cr: Cute. Black should play 26. ... Bxg2! Now, White has to take a move that removes his own threats against h7. 27. Qxg2, Qxc1; 28. Bd1, Qc3+. Now if White plays 29. Kf1?, Ne3+! and the White Queen is lost. (Note the fact that the f-Pawn is now pinned.)

So White has to submit to 29. Ke2, Qxe5+; 30. Kd2, Rd8+. Now Black is up by 2 Pawns and has a raging attack against the exposed White King. For example, 31. Kc2, Rc8+; 32. Kb1, Qc3; 33. Bxa4, Qxb4+; 34. Bb3, Nd4 and Black retains his 2 Pawn advantage.

Jul-12-13  geniokov: Ok,let me finish this with my variation given above,26...Bxg2 27.Qxg2 Qc3+! (why Qc1 if check at c3 is more killing!) 28.Kd1 Rd8+! 29.Nd3(29. Bd3,then 29..Qxe5!) 29.. Qa1+! 30.Kd2(30.Kc2,then 30..Kxa2+wins) 30..Qb2+!! 31.Kd1 Rxd3+!!! 32.Bxd3 Ne3+!!! Win! 33.fxe3,then 33..Qxg2! winning the Queen!
Jul-12-13  geniokov: I hope it's clear now with my variation.
Jul-12-13  BOSTER: Certainly, 26...Bxg2 27.Qxg2 Qxe5 <looks conclusive>...but in this case <CG> didn't give 3 stars for this <puzzle>.

<cyclon> <26...Bxg2 27.Qxg2 Qc1+ 28.Bd1 Qc3+ 29.Ke2 Qb2-this is the key-move of the combo>.

I have another opinion.
The idea of this combo is very interesting and useful method -to take the piece ( or the pawn) with tempo ( with check).

After 26...Bxg2 27.Qxg2 Qc1+ 28.Bd1 Qc3+ 29.Ke2 black take the knight on e5 with tempo Qxe5!- this is an idea. I'll give you another ex. (diagram)

White to play, mate in 4. the same idea.

Jul-12-13  geniokov: Let me try <BOSTER>

1.Qf1+ Ke8 2.Qb5+ Kf8 3.Qxc5+ Ke8 4.Qe7+#

Jul-12-13  James D Flynn: Black is a pawn up but on his next move White threatens 27.Nxg6 and if hxg6 28.Qh8+ Kf7 29.Rh7+ Ke8 30.Qxf8+ Kxf8 31.Rxb7 and White has a R for a N with an easily won endgame. 26……Bxg2 27.Qxg2 Qc1+ 28.Bd1 Qc3+ 29.Ke2(not Kf1 Ne3+ wins the Q) Qxe5+ 30.Kd2 Qd4+ 31.Ke2 Qc4+ 32.Kd2 Qxa2+ 33.Bc2 Rd8+ 34.Kc3 Rc8+ 35.Kd3 Qxc2#
Jul-12-13  5hrsolver: 26..Bxg2 27.Qxg2 Qc1+ 28.Bd1 Qc3+ 29.Ke2 Qxe5+ 30.Kd2 Rd8+ 31.Kc2 a3 and mate by the queen on b2

  LIFE Master AJ: 26.Ne5,
White looks like he might be able to hold this position.

But don't take my word for it, have a look for yourself.

[ RR26.Qh2 Rc8!]

26...Bxg2!!; 27.Qxg2,
It appears that White does not have anything better, some of the engines begin to play the <dreaded> game of "giveaway" here.

27... Qc1+!; White resigns!?

[ The game could have finished with the following line:

27...Qc1+!; 28.Bd1 Ne3!!;
The most decisive. (And this has got to be the best.)

***** ***** ***** *****

a.) Not as effective is: RR28...Rd8!?; 29.0-0! Rxd1; 30.Qa8+, when Black is still better, but White has some counterplay.

b.) Also winning was: 28...Qc3+!; 29.Kf1, The box gives this as being best/forced. (Also bad was: RR29.Ke2 Qxe5+; etc. )
29...Ne3+; 30.Kg1 Nxg2; 31.Kxg2 Qxe5; when Black has an easy win.

***** ***** ***** *****

29.fxe3 Qxe3+; 30.Be2, Again - this looks forced for White.

(Much worse was: </= 30.Qe2? Qc3+; 31.Qd2 Qg3+; 32.Ke2 Rf2+; 33.Ke1 Rf3+; 34.Ke2 Qf2#.)

30...Qc1+!; 31.Bd1 Qc3+!; 32.Ke2,
Again - just about all the engines show this as being forced.

(</= 32.Qd2? Qg3+; " " transposes to the last note. (Which is winning for Black.) )

32...Qb2+; 33.Kd3 Qxg2; (and) Black has a relatively easy win. ]

0-1
