Phony Benoni: This round one game, originally scheduled for December 27, was rescheduled for the rest day on December 31 when icy roads prevented some players from arriiving on time. "The TImes", Friday, December 28, 1962.

perfidious: That is an obvious canard-the roads in Britain never ice over!

As for the game itself, Clarke's line is better replaced by 8.gxf5 gxf5 9.Qh5+ Ng6 10.exf5 Qh4 11.Qf3, as played in J Benjamin vs C Lakdawala, 1989. In a game with Peter J Bereolos, Cambridge 1989, I tried the queenless middlegame as in P Meister vs V Arapovic, 1989, soon getting an advantage due to weak play by Black. Not sure this offers much, really.
